Well besides your shmups >_> You know what I'm getting at though.
To be clear, I wouldn't play third-party games on the Wii U anyway. At least I can't see myself playing many of them. My point was that many people do want parity across consoles, and when it doesn't exist it hurts sales for the one. Strong third party support guarantees longer life and more strong first party titles, and the lack thereof worries me.
Me neither, for the most part. Most of the multiplat stuff I get on PC, but I can see getting certain things for Wii U if enough effort is put into making it feel significantly different (and better of course) than the other versions.

I see what you're trying to get out from the whole business angle though. But then again, the Gamecube had quite a good amount of multiplatform releases and that didn't make much difference in the long run.
Well also, I think many consumers don't buy every console in a given generation, like you or Erik or myself. So 3rd party support may sway them towards the WiiU, as the one console they buy, if they like Nintendo games and games like AC or ME or CoD.
True, it certainly wouldn't hurt at all. I don't think it would change things too dramatically though. I think it's really just as simple as Nintendo isn't as important to your average kid or gamer anymore. They've sort've fallen into their own little niche. Good or bad, that's probably just the way it is. =(

Sucks. :(
I can't really see how this "sucks" unless you're a hardcore Nintendo fan who will never buy more than 1 console in a gen.

In my eyes it's great to have at least one of the big 3 do do something different and have their own unique identity. Looking at this gen, the PS3 and 360 offeredmore or less the exact same games, content, and experiences. Where's the fun in that? I'd rather have it like the 32/64 bit era where each console had it's own identity and were truly different.

I'm a fan of video games, not so much companies. If everything is headed multiplatform releases on similarly spec'ed hardware then that IMO is bad for gamers as a whole.
Erm, well less 3rd party support for Wii-U equals less good games in general. I mean these things are not exactly cheap.

Well, the 32/64 bit era the consoles were wildly different (not necessarily for the better), in practical terms the 360 and PS3 are still quite a bit different from each other. Honestly, I dont see how 360 vs PS3 comparisons are that much different from SNES vs Genesis if we were to be totally objective. Only difference is Sony and Microsoft aren't making commercials bashing each others brand.

Less games is never good news, for sure.

Better or worse is subjective of course. How many games even came out on both the SNES and Genesis? Not much, and even alot of the ones that did were quite radically different.

I was trying to point out that nowadays when a game is announced or released it's almost always a multiplatform title. Exclusives are becoming rarer and rarer and that really diminishes the value of any particular game console to me. I sold off my 360 about a year ago when I realized there was practically no upcoming exclusives that interested me and about 10 of the 14 games or so I did own I could obtain on either PC or PS3.

At least with Nintendo you know there will be plenty of exclusive stuff that you will never get anywhere else, no ports to PC a year later or PS3 director's cuts.

Hm? Maybe not the games that defined those consoles, but there certainly were a lot of games that you could play on both.

Most games with the same title were more or less the same game. Games like Aladdin were exceptions not the norm between the Genesis and SNES. Of course you rarely see that in today's market.

I was trying to point out that nowadays when a game is announced or released it's almost always a multiplatform title.
If I had to assume, I would say that most games that have been made since the first game have probably been multi plat. But yes, exclusives are less important.

At it's core, I really feel that the only reason people are mad that there are less exclusives is because it makes it harder to argue about what console is better. Objectively speaking, it is irrational to be upset that you can now play games on more platforms. It is better for both the fans and the industry that companies do not have a strangle on the major third parties like in the past.

In less something has changed, people have been selling their consoles in every generation due to realizing they could live with out their library. I've seen plenty of n64s being sold because Nintendo failed to get third party support. When people realized that having Super Mario 64 wasn't the end all to be all, it didn't seem to really matter that you couldn't play it on your Playstation.

At least with Nintendo you know there will be plenty of exclusive stuff that you will never get anywhere else, no ports to PC a year later or PS3 director's cuts.
That comes off as arbitrary to me. Do you really think that I would enjoy the PS3 version of NBA 2k13 more if I knew that people on Xbox couldn't experience the same gamegame?

The exclusive argument really makes no sense Nintendo especially if we were to reference the Wii.

For one, when most people talk about exclusives for the Wii they're usually games that were made by Nintendo (yes, there are plenty of third party exclusives, but let's not dive into semantics. The games that define the Wii to the average joe core game are Nintendo made). In those regards, how are they any different from the PS3 and to an extent the 360? In less I'm missing something the most famous exclusives for the PS3 are made by Sony, and you're sure as heck not seeing them on a Nintendo console any time soon.

Two, having a ton of exclusives but no multiplats....is almost counter productive from a fans point of view.

Having Mario and shit is great, but the overall library and gaming experience is still hurt badly since you do not have access to most of the big titles. In other words, from the perspective of someone who only has a Nintendo system, games like Mass Effect, Street Fighter 4, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy etc might as well be exclusive because...that individual cannot play them (that is exclusivity, is it not?). It is not a good thing to have zero third party support, and it actually makes the strength of having good exclusives pretty irrelevant.

It is probably why I would say that the PS3 has the strongest software line up, since they have most of the essential multiplat games with a strong core of exclusives.

As for the Xbox in itself, it isn't a coincidence that you're picking on it. People do not buy Xbox's for exclusive software (outside of their two Ips with some supplementary exclusives), they buy it for the premier service. Xbox live is their exclusive and their killer IP. You also get a great multimedia center and the arcade (it is strange that people bring up exclusives, but no one brings up the indie games for the 360 which is vastly superior to PSN and VC).

All in all, just having a fun debate with you, but really, there is no reason to get so hung up on exclusives. It is not a good thing at all for a console to give their consumer less options. There are enough exclusives that exist now that make it easy enough to decide what console one would like to buy.

The fact that the PS3 and 360 share so many games is actually a relief, because it means I won't have to sacrifice not playing so many games in order to experience certain exclusives. I don't think it was very fun to have bought the Gamecube in order to play its exclusives and miss out on the ton of PS2 games because Nintendo was stubborn as hell in getting more third party support. I don't think there should be that quite big of a punishment because I want to play Mario.

That's what I'm getting at. If you were to come up with a similar list of defining games for ps3 and 360, the majority of the games would be on both lists.
Violent By Design wrote:

Yes, but like you said they weren't the defining games.

Less important? I'll be waiting a while before getting the next Xbox or Playstation but when I do, the one with more exclusive games I want will be the console I purchase for sure. All of the extra stuff like Social Network stuff, media center apps, and exclusive DLC isn't going to persuade me over quality software.

Fanboys will always argue over something. Lately it's been "OMG, 360 version runs 3fps faster and no screen tearing!" or whatever. But don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not mad. Without this my steam library wouldn't be half as full as it is now. I just worry that we'll get to that point where consoles begin to phase themselves out with redundancy between platforms.

That's pretty much exactly why I sold my 360. I realized I could live without playing Forza, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey ever again and there was wasn't much I foresaw in the future that I'd imagine getting on 360 over the PS3. The key difference would be if I wanted to play Bayonetta or Alan Wake, I could get it elsewhere without rebuying a system in order to do so.

But I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed the PS3 version of MGS4 more then they did the 360 ver....oh nevermind. That exclusive was important to me (and many others) and made us want the PS3 over the competition.

Of course, I agree wholeheartedly. I was just pointing out that for Nintendo, securing exclusive 3rd party games would seem more effective than worrying whether or not you have the next Madden or Battlefield on your system. Think the equivalent of MGS4 for the PS3. Bayonetta 2 seems to be one notable example. It's not like they have absolutely no multiplatform releases in the pipeline. It's just not as good as the other two companies and should be a bit worrying for the hardcore Nintendo fan.
Violent By Design wrote:It is probably why I would say that the PS3 has the strongest software line up, since they have most of the essential multiplat games with a strong core of exclusives.
I'm with you there. I got my PS3 in early 2008 and played nothing but CoD4, PS1, and PS2 games on it until MGS4 came out. A year or two ago I was starting to get a little fatigued with alot of the stuff I was playing on PS3 and 360. I found Xenoblade Chronicles and a few other big Wii games and started to look deeper into the Wii library and from there I was hooked. The games themselves were such a breath of fresh air. I was kicking myself for skipping over the Wii library and Nintendo in general for so long.

I never actually used Live for that long as I don't play many online games. I absolutely wanted Super Meat Boy, but that came out on Steam later so yeah. I stick to PC for indie stuff. I actually don't hate the 360 or anything like that, it's just as you put it, I could live without the couple games I had for it.

It is certainly a relief on the wallet to by less systems, no arguments there!
I'm happy with my PC + Nintendo combination for now. There's still a handful more PS3 games I'm eager to play too. Not in too much of a rush to get the next xbox or PS4 though, I'll let them sort themselves out for who wants my money. :D

I hope this doesn't derail the thread, but I was curious about this. Did Nintendo ever even bash Sega? As a kid, I remember liking both brands, until I saw Sega commercials bashing Nintendo. I loved that Nintendo never went down that road. They used their commercials to actually promote their games, instead of using it to slander the competitor like Sega always seemed to do.

Of course, I could be wrong and just never saw any commercials like that from Nintendo.

The DKC commercial did, as mentioned here, but yeah, for the most part they didn't directly say anything.

That said, they did shift their tone to match more of the attitude that Sega had.

I'm pretty sure when the SNES came out Nintendo made commercials saying how it had more colors than the Genesis, and how Super Mario World was the shiznit.
