Hell yeah, just announced at GDC
Sega is re-releasing a remastered version of the original Sonic 1 using Christian Whitehead's retro engine (that powered Sonic CD). 60 fps, widescreen, remixed soundtrack, time attack mode, and a bevvy of other features included.
iOS and android announced thus far, but it'll likely come to a buttload of other venues. $2.99
This is awesome.

Too bad it won't control very well, being iOS and all.
Hopefully they bring it over to PSN or something.

Android supports bluetooth controllers. Totally the way I played Sonic CD on my tablet.AppleQueso wrote:Too bad it won't control very well, being iOS and all.

Sonic Retro is hinting that Sonic 2 will be next. Also announced: House of the Dead Overkill: The lost files.

Heck if they wait until S3K and just release all 3 at once on PSN that'd be pretty awesome.TheSonicRetard wrote:Android supports bluetooth controllers. Totally the way I played Sonic CD on my tablet.AppleQueso wrote:Too bad it won't control very well, being iOS and all.

There are screenshots out now, but they're just Sonic 1 in widescreen with the HUD moved around, so I'll refrain from posting them.
This was announced during the mobile portion of Sega's GDC show, so that's likely the reasons for the lack of XBLA, PSN, and Steam announcements. Considering Sega's DD focus, those outlets are a lock.

Oh man, someone just mentioned that they should add Knuckles. While that's been done via rom hacks already, it'd be trivial to do with the retro engine. A major hurdle the original game had to overcome was how many objects used Sonic's blue in them, and the way romhackers got around it was by decreasing Knuckle's color depth and using the 2 shades of red available in Sonic's sneakers, so the blue used could be retained in the palette.
But with the retro engine, none of this is a problem at all. All the technical reasons why Knuckles couldn't exist are gone. I hope they do this!

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog remastered - uses retro engine - $2.9
Considering that it's just the same game with widescreen support I don't see myself getting excited for this. I mean, a major part of the feel of speed IS the limited screen real-estate. Imagine playing Sonic Advance where your horizontal view is twice as large and that's about how impressive it's going to feel.
Of course I could be wrong, and want to be wrong.
Also, I don't know how this counts as "remastered" but at least they aren't slapping "HD" indiscriminately like they've been doing with a lot of their re-releases as of late.

I hope future tablets come with a d-pad and 2 buttons as standard, that is if the market doesn't flatline before then
