Who else prices games this way?

Post by ThunderPrince »

So, I was hoping maybe someone on here has been to a store that does this. After work I hit up a used game shop looking for a Genesis multi-tap and maybe snag some loose carts. The last time I was there they had a display with lots of common genesis carts, but this time there was a full rack of boxed games as well. Sonic 2 was $7.95 boxed, but Sonic 2 loose was....$7.95. Did I miss something?
So I asked him what the deal was with the prices, he said "we charge for just the game, if we get a game with a case we sell it complete. The cases are just something extra", it really confused me. I didn't know how to explain the way the rest of the world deals in used games. Why wouldn't you add a little something for the complete game? Why am I expected to pay full price for an incomplete game? The loose carts should be cheaper, but I didn't want to look like an ass and tell them how to run their store.

So, does anyone else do this? I've never seen such a backwards way of pricing before. Their loose carts were way more expensive than anyone should have to pay. I guess that's why they've got the same supply they had when they opened. Enjoy letting those $12 loose copies of Golden Axe and Mickey Mania sit there for all eternity. Good games without a home, it weighs heavy on my poor old heart.

I've spent hundreds of dollars on just boxes in the past. No games, just boxes and manuals. That is nuts, there is definitely a market for those items. Hell, in several cases, the boxes and manuals themselves are worth more than the game itself!

You have a lucky setup there, don't clue that guy in. Just consider it a perk. If they're actually giving away game boxes, I would stock up on certain sorts of cases so you could gut them later for pricier games.

For my research, it seems most people just go on ebay these days and browse completed auctions to determine how to price their stuff. The retro game shops in Houston do this, and even flea markets and pawn shops have started to do it, too.

Gamestop has done this for an eternity.

Agree w/second post. Find a way to make it work for you. I LOVE finding stores like this, if they are a bit high on a cart, they are likely a bit low on CIB.

They definitely aren't giving them away. By extra he meant that they don't toss away the cases, no matter what you get you are paying the same either way which is pretty bogus. Believe me, if I could just walk away with a fat stack of cases to re-purpose I totally would, I have dozens of loose carts in need of boxes.

If they can make reproduction zappers and controllers, sticks, A/C adapters, etc. then why aren't they making accurate Genesis repro cases? Collectors could save a lot of money and still have handsome display options.

Would you rather this guy raise prices on all the boxed copies? You found a place to potentially snag good deals, be grateful for it!

I understood your post, but from the prices you quoted, it seems more like the box is a freebee, with the price being about what a cart by itself might go for.

As for your question - I assume the demand isn't there. The plants which produced these cases still have the equipment to do so - Pier Solar's team mentioned how they had to place a large order to get them to produce them, but the ability still existed - so I'm guessing it all comes down to demand.

Additionally - they make reproduction zappers? I didn't know that...

Well, on the subject of new cases, there are these:

The reviews say they are not original, and also not of the same quality, but there you have it just the same. I've considered ordering some to see what they're like.

I've ordered those before. They're actually extremely similar to Brazilian SMS cases, which themselves are noticeably different from normal sega cases to the touch. At a glance, they look identical, but you can immediately spot the difference when you hold them - the plastic which holds the label in place is smooth, unlike the textured plastic on normal genesis cases.

This would be great if you're trying to replace a Brazilian case, except the plastic is also much thicker than a Brazilian case. The label plastic on a Brazilian case is notoriously thin, and they easily scratch.

See that's interesting, especially since I've never seen one of the Brazilian cases in person.

Do you think they're worth it with the differences being what they are, or is original the way to go?

I've gone out of my way to get original cases before and I will again, but at the same time it'd be nice to have these easily available, and possibly a better alternative to UGCs or 27mm dvd boxes.
