Retronauts lives!

Post by AppleQueso »

After the announcement of 1up's closure, a few of us were worried about the future of the Retronauts podcast.

There's been a kickstarter to bring the podcast back, and while it's not quite funded yet, it's only been running a couple of hours and it's already almost there. and it just got funded!

So we're getting at least a year's worth of episodes, and if this funding keeps up, probably a good amount more after that.

Yay! :D

I just downloaded the *final* podcast, well at least that's what they called it, and they're an intelligent bunch of people. Fascinating discussion on the past, present, and future of the Virtual Console.

I would totally have paid $30 for that 1-hour exclusive DVD.

Damn shame they're all gone already.

Stupid 7pm - 1am shift @ work.

Paying for equipment, a place to record, a place to host the episodes, etc? I mean they actually do this stuff in person as opposed to over skype or something. 1UP was fronting these costs in the past, after all.

I'm very, very grateful for the excellent comparatively low-budget podcasts out there like RB's and RF Gen's, but I don't think that should mean that it's wrong or unjustifiable for a different group to work with a different budget.

Update | 3/23: Wow, the speed with which this venture hit its goal caught us completely off-guard. We have stretch goals in the works and will have those posted by the end of the weekend (expect video, livestreams, and more). Also, because the reward tiers filled up so quickly, we've added more. Specifically, we've added 100 DVDs, 50 combo packs, 6 choose-a-topics, and 2 more co-hosting opportunities. And there'll be additional rewards available once we roll out the stretch goals. Stay tuned!
Looks like I'm getting that DVD after all!

But what really excites me most is this paragraph...
While this Kickstarter is intended to fund a year of podcasts, we'd love to do much more with the Retronauts brand, including a website beyond just the basics, extra episodes, books, live streams, video, panels at events like PAX, and much more. And if we break our initial goal, we'll start revealing our gradual plans for world domination via crowd-sourcing. Deal?
The future is looking very bright for fans of the podcast. 8)

Here's a recent email I got after donating...
As you may have gathered, we were caught a bit off-guard by the speed with which we hit our goal. In fact, we had pegged $20,000 for our first theoretical stretch milestone, but we're already well past that point. So we've bumped it up to $24,000, because what's the fun in a slam dunk? Oh, wait, we're almost at 24K. Oh well. Looks like we're in it for weekly shows, then, because you see, our first goal is precisely that.

$24,000: If we manage to hit 24K, which is to say basically that if anyone else at all contributes, we'll produce mini-Retronauts podcasts on the "off" weeks between the 26 regular shows. They'll be like normal episodes, but tinier... and probably more experimental or specific.

$30,000: At 30K, we'll pay someone to create a sweet-ass new podcast theme for us. Someone awesome .

$36,000: If we make it to 36K, we'll each have the means to produce regular, high-quality Retronauts video projects for our currently unused YouTube channel.

$42,000: At 42K, we'll run two 24-hour livestreams for charity -- shows we'll produce in addition to our previously promised content. Also, the funding you contribute to reach this stretch goal over the previous one will be used as charitable donations to get the ball rolling.

$52,000: This tier will cover our travel expenses to three events throughout the year for live Retronauts panels -- pending venue approval, of course. Will we be at PAX? Classic Gaming Expo? Who knows! But we hope to see you there.

$60,000: We'll create a Retronauts book -- or maybe more than one? We'll see! We will try to get our work produced by an actual publishing house, but failing that we'll self-publish.

$72,000: We'll transform retronauts.com from a mere blog into a legit website, with professional design, cool tech, forums, and other community-facing stuff.

$85,000: All of the stuff above happens again for a second year, possibly a third, with no need for additional fundraising.

$100,000: Hugs for everyone!? (Pending hug approval.)

And to top it all off, we'll be adding new reward tiers related to these new stretch goals soon. But here's one we can announce now: Everyone who has contributed at the $100 tier or higher will be receiving all the physical rewards, too: The button/sticker, the DVD, and the T-shirt. Thanks for your support, everyone!
