By comparing party HP levels to marauding monsters? My favorite JRPG, Final Fantasy Legend II, let you turn into the monsters you were fighting (the 'monster' class). A really good transformation netted you a monster from the next chapter.
By how much time has passed? Games like Fallout 2 or Survival Kids, your survival quite literally can be measured in days.
By my score? For free-roaming action games like Smash TV or some modes in Burnout, the score-counter is the best way to see how deep you're getting yourself into.
By slouching less? In an odd game, Lester the Unlikely (a Prince of Persia-type 2D platformer) had your character's posture (and responsiveness) improve as the game progressed; instead of stumbling forward at the beginning, by the end of the game, Lester can go into a full sprint.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis. Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Lol me too. I used to obsess over that game doing challenge runs. In fact, I ripped the sprites used in your avatar while trying to make Castlevania Online. It was probably the sprite sheet I made up used to make the animated GIF.
I measure RPG progress in 10's of hours. Probably why I don't play them much any more.
