Arcade Directory

Post by lisalover1 »

I thought it would be a good idea to make a companion list to the Retro Game Store Directory specifically for video arcades. Since arcades have shrunk into obscurity, it would be helpful to gamers to have a list of arcades that are still running. There are only two rules for this list. Other than that, it works just like the RGSD:

1. No Chuck-E-Cheese or Dave and Busters locations unless there are some highly notable cabinets there. If so, be sure to note them.

2. No arcades that rely more on ticket redemption machines than actual video games. Once again, unless there are some notable cabs that should be listed.

Also, just a suggestion. If there are cabinets in an arcade that are either rare or noteworthy, be sure to list 2 or 3 of them so that we can get an idea of what the arcade is like.

Maine

Palace Playland
1 Old Orchard Street
Old Orchard Beach, ME 04064
http://www.palaceplayland.com/

It's affiliated with an amusement park, it may be the only arcade left in Maine. It's certainly the only one I can think of. The ticket redemption crap has taken it over somewhat, but some classic cabs still remain - Pac-Man/Galaga, X-Men, Ninja Turtles, The Lost World, some old light gun games....... Next time I visit I can get a complete list.

FYI the Barcade is the greatest arcade ever. If you are in the area you simply have to check it out, just look at that game list.

Also what ever happened to the7k's arcade?

This custom Google Map has a good list of "classic" style arcades, although it hasn't been updated in over a year.

But I'll give you a good one --

Stop & Play
10933 U.S. Route 19
Port Richey, FL 34668
(727) 862-6666
http://www.stop-n-play.com/

They were a satellite location to New Hampshire's famous Funspot until 1988 when they changed over to their current name.

A couple from my home, the San Francisco Bay Area

Musee Mecanique
Pier 45 Shed A, San Francisco, CA
(415) 346-2000
More of a museum than an arcade but you are allowed to play the games so perhaps it counts. Game Center CX did an episode there.

Sunnyvale Golfland Arcade
855 E El Camino Real Sunnyvale, CA 94087
(408) 245-1322
(Capcom's old testing ground, many never-released Capcom arcade games were tested here back in the 80s and 90s. This is where I learned to play Street Fighter II)

Milpitas Golfland Arcade
1199 Jacklin Rd Milpitas, CA 95035
(408) 263-6855
(Mostly fighting games, some classics, ticket redemption games are in a separate building)

Boomers Livermore
2400 Kitty Hawk Rd Livermore, CA 94550
(925) 447-7275
(Ticket redemption arcade but with some fighting games, classic cabs and a couple huge DDR machines)

Here is the episode of Game Center CX goes to San Francisco. The other San Francisco arcade featured is now closed. :(

Second this, the huge variety of vintage Arcade Cabinets. Not only video screen cabs, but older mechanical ones as well.

Do Pinball arcades count as well? Maybe the Pinball Museum in Vegas? Just like Musee, all tables can be played by visitors. Oh and there are a few obscure cabs in there as well. :D

Las Vegas NV 89119

Thanks for bringing that link of Game Center! I watched it this afternoon. Good to know the show embraces the American audience that has built over the years. Also a shame to see that Southtown arcade close. The dude running it seemed to have a real passion for Japanese-style arcade gaming, with all those candy cabs no less!

Great little arcade (emphasis on little), hidden on the outskirts of town. I had a lot of fun going here as a reward after exams at NIU(Yes, THAT NIU).
