Only Liking Certain Games in a Series

Post by Forlorn Drifter »

I think this is something that I personally need to talk about, considering it is something that always has and more than likely always will aggravate me.

Sometimes, I only like certain games in a series. For most, it is of little issue. For those like me, it is something that will drive you flipping mad. For the most part, it bothers me to say I only like certain games in a series, due to the fact it makes me feel like less of a fan of that series. For example, I'll use the Witcher series. I love the second game to death, and then some. The first game? Ehh... I didn't like the combat. It didn't feel like I was in the action, more like I was watching the action. The story was good and all, but the gameplay didn't work for me like it did in the second.

Another reason I have issues with it is story. I'm a story geek. If it has story enough to matter, I will cling to it. Gears of War, for example. Its a stupid, thin, and simple story, but I love it for whatever odd reason. I love the whole universe. But many things are making me question the upcoming game, which looks somewhat half assed, and is being made by a different developer.

What are your thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions? Squids?

The first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was Final Fantasy.
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

Yep, Final Fantasy is the most obvious pick.

Star Ocean is another series that's been brought up recently in the RPG forum. Not a fan of the newer games.

Another time I have issues with it is when I can't get the whole series on the same console. My example is my wariness of what console I'm buying next gen, and the fact that I have the 360 version of Witcher 2. I think I'll go nuts if I have to buy Witcher 3 on PS4.

I have this problem, but I'm fine with it so long as I can own all the games on the same companies systems.

For example, again: Final Fantasy. It's impossible to have them all on the same system, but I IS possible to have them all on Sony systems.

I don't think there's anything that says you have to like every game in the series to be a fan of that series. This rings especially true with large franchises. You can be a Mario fan and dislike Super Mario Sunshine, for example.

Yup. The DS remake was ported to PSN as a PSP/Vita title.

$20. I own it. ;D

Why is this an issue?

Eh, just a visual satisfaction problem I guess. Not sure.
