Did Call of Duty ruin a generation of gamers?

Call of Duty is a great game you just have to either mute everyone or play in a party with friends. You see my best friend is away at medical school and Call of Duty is all he has time for and its a great way for us to catch up on things.

I have to admit, i bought a 360 for COD 2. On launch day. I was like oh shit, this is next generation. I laughed at my friends that had to have the gimped Big red one port. I really really enjoyed 1&2 but i just got tired of the series after that. COD 3 turned me off of the series at the time. By the time i got back to the franchise my interest in the genre had died down..

Honestly, at this point it is just in to hate on COD, Halo, and Gears to a lesser extent.

I bought my friends younger bro a genesis for christmas and he plays it at least once a week and is always looking for old games to play. He loves COD, hell hes better than me at it (damn im getting old), but he is clearly not ruined.

Ruined gamers is a bit much. Maybe stunted in some cases, developers too. But if every developer expects COD money their deluding themselves.

I think CoD played a big part in widening the general gaming demographic. For many, it seems to have been a strong introduction to the hobby. I can't tell you how many CoD players I know who went on to try out Skyrim, for example.

It's not like Call of Duty is the only game like that out there. Just about any game on Steam pretty much qualifies. MMORPGs are even better, if you can keep yourself from becoming too addicted (assuming lack of free time is an issue).

I'm not a certified psychologist, but in truth this does not surprise me at all. FPS competition has been this way since the early days of Doom multiplayer. In fact, trash talk in the multiplayer FPS was started by former id dev John Romero, who began the trend with his fellow devs at id Software as a means to play up his superiority, shock others into playing worse, and perhaps bond with them in a macho manner. The book Masters of Doom chronicles the impact that Romero's trash talk had on id Software and then the early members of QuakeCon. My particular favorite is his use of the phrase, "Suck it down you monkey fuck!"

And I should also state that this manner of interaction actually bothers me less than the recent League of Legends case involving Good Game University (GGU) General Manager Sam “Hexo” Bouchard, who has received an official reprimand over his use of DoS attacks to bring down opponents. Between using technology to specifically deny me the ability to play and dampen by competitiveness or overly enthusiastic swearing into a mic, I'll take the swearing any day of the week.

I should also admit that I have played in FPS LAN games, and I behaved exactly like those guys in that video.
