DKC isn't too hard, though it gets frustrating towards the end. I can blaze through the thing in an hour or two pretty easy, but I also know the game pretty well.
DKC2 on the other hand is way more difficult. I've never finished that one...
What RPG are you playing right now?

I've beaten both DKC2 and DKC3, just not the first one.AppleQueso wrote:DKC isn't too hard, though it gets frustrating towards the end. I can blaze through the thing in an hour or two pretty easy, but I also know the game pretty well.

Honestly though, Chrono Trigger gets to me the most, what with its plethora of endings. It's not as bad as, say, Star Ocean: The Second Story, but it's still a behemoth of gameplay in its own right to mark complete.

Ah. Never did get around to 3 myself.Ack wrote:I've beaten both DKC2 and DKC3, just not the first one.AppleQueso wrote:DKC isn't too hard, though it gets frustrating towards the end. I can blaze through the thing in an hour or two pretty easy, but I also know the game pretty well.

Doesn't the game's storyline also branch in some pretty cool and wildly different directions depending on what you do at certain points?Honestly though, Chrono Trigger gets to me the most, what with its plethora of endings. I've played through the game, but I don't think I ever beat it. Certainly didn't explore any of the alternate endings or different story points.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Exactly. Which is why I'm hesitant to pick it up. I know if I play a game like Breath of Fire, I can go straight through, which works well for my desire to continue beating games. But Chrono Trigger throws a monkey wrench into the gears. It may be a spectacular monkey wrench of incredible storytelling, but it's still a wrench.

If I recall correctly - I have not played Chrono Trigger since it was a new SNES game - you complete the main story and then go back in time, "Bill & Ted"-style, and mess with history a bit to get different endings. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think that you start essentially a "New Game+" where you can proceed to the final boss at almost any point in the main story. Depending on the tasks that you have accomplished or skipped up to the point when you proceed to the final boss, you will receive a different ending.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is how it works. I don't recall anything that you can change in your first playthrough, its all in the "New Game+"prfsnl_gmr wrote:If I recall correctly - I have not played Chrono Trigger since it was a new SNES game - you complete the main story and then go back in time, "Bill & Ted"-style, and mess with history a bit to get different endings. And, honestly, its more like icing on the cake. You'll get the experience of the game without doing the bonus endings. I didn't get a "Yes, I completed this" feel from going and seeing them, but more of a feeling akin to watching the extras on a DVD after watching the movie.
Not that its a bad thing to go check em out, but don't let it dissuade you from playing the game. If you would get to it quicker by playing the game through and not worrying about the endings, you'll still get a great experience. Don't miss out on the optional quests though, those are a must!

I like those games quite a bit - I have the Dreamcast versions. There's also an Evolution game on the NGPC of all things.TheSSNintendo wrote:Is Evolution Worlds an ok RPG for the Gamecube? My brother gave it me years ago, but I never really played it.
Arcana is one I need to purchase/finish myself.Ack wrote:Sorry BoneSnap, I decided I'd give Arcana a whirl and have discovered I really like it! But 7th Saga is definitely on my list! I have a new gameplay goal to have completed 100 SNES games in my collection(I've completed 86 currently), so I will have to go after it soon. I want to get onto Backloggery's Top 10 Members Completed SNES section, and I currently only need 25 to tie for the 10th place slot.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Ack,
I recommend The 7th Saga. It's more difficult that most 16-bit JRPGs, but it has an atmosphere that's unmatched. It's completely different from every other RPG on the SNES (well, except for the sequel).
It's one of those games I always saw in Nintendo Power as a kid, but could never find in a store - very frustrating. I love the art style.

It's not that bad man. You don't have to jump through hoops to get the multiple endings like you would with Star Ocean. You simply need to complete the New Game+ during specific critical points of the game. It's tons of fun - the only slightly annoying aspect is that you need to defeat the final boss multiple times - and that boss fight is looooooong.Ack wrote: Honestly though, Chrono Trigger gets to me the most, what with its plethora of endings. If you want to roll through CT and see all the endings I recommend looking at StrategyWiki's ending guide. It's easy to miss a few if you're not careful.

Personally, I've found I adore it! Yes, it has some issues: I wish I could zoom out of the map, and in some areas the encounter rate is ridiculous. But the combat is easy to get the hang of and doesn't feel as overly brutal as many WRPG dungeon crawlers I've played. Also, I love that the game gives a 45 degree view when when turning or transitioning, which makes the dungeon feel more whole as opposed to the 90 degree shifts in others.
I might give Chrono Trigger a run sometime soon, but I've got quite a few RPGs to finish! I should really write out a list and just have you guys offer thoughts and suggestions.

There's two classifications of endings. The first are the standard endings, which are based on whether you crash Epoch into Lavos or not, and if Crono is alive or not. I don't remember if Crono being dead has a difference between Epoch being crashed or not.BoneSnapDeez wrote:It's not that bad man. Then you have the New Game+ endings. If you sufficiently powered up in your first playthrough then you can get all of these on the second playthrough by saving right before each time you go fight Lavos.
