Camelot handles these games for Nintendo and both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis: Power Tour on the GBA are very RPG-like. I haven't played Golf, but Power Tour has you exploring a Tennis Academy while a story about a secret Tennis team unravels around you. It's pretty cool.

Unfortunately they took out the RPG elements in the recent 3DS release and I'd imagine the new Golf game on the horizon will also be void of them.

If you're into golf games, I highly recommend Neo Turf Masters for the Neo Geo CD. If you have a Dreamcast, you can download a homebrew port from theisozone.com, which is how I play all my Neo Geo games since I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a real system at the prices they go for.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

NTM is also on the SNK Arcade Classic compilation.
