I generally don't like the implication that sites are paid to give good reviews because it doesn't allow for the possibility that the reviewer might have genuinely enjoyed a game that got negative scores from everyone else. The attitude of "everyone says it's bad, therefore it is" seems beyond snobbish to me and I've been seeing it more and more lately in all types of media. I can't tell you how many times I've been insulted because I genuinely thought Green Hornet was a great movie and Harold and Kumar was a terrible one. I've also talked to many people who take AVGN's reviews at face value and ignore the fact that he's a comedian and James Rolfe doesn't necessarily think a game is bad because he does an episode about it, he's just trying to be funny (and he is). It drives me crazy.

We all know about the Kane & Lynch fiasco. Or Rab Florecence getting kicked out of Eurogamer. Or the "Call of Duty Spa". Or IGN being on record saying that they couldn't give the game less than a seven because Sony would pull the advertisments.

These sites have lied over and over again (Not 1Up from what I know) and will do it again on the future. Why trust them? It's like trusting the Sun or the Daily Mail.

Other than people with families potentially losing their jobs, I don't give a rat's ass for those sites. Maybe they were once something great, but now gamespy and IGN are just horrible.

1UP was nice and ofc retronauts will be missed, but that's what you get wheny ou are bought out by the devil.

Yeah, I do think there's great value from reading user reviews and forum posts, and watching youtube reviews from fellow gamers. These are NORMAL people just speaking honestly about a game. People who are paid to do this for a living are not entirely reliable. I honestly wouldn't mind if the whole profession of being a reviewer, for any entertainment medium, came to an end tomorrow. We don't really need paid professionals to tell us what is and isn't good. We can figure that out for ourselves or by talking to people we know whose opinions have more value.

Remember how Dan Hsu got fired from EGM for calling people out for giving good reviews for advertising deals, or when GameSpot fired the guy who gave Kane and Lynch a 6/10 because they were advertising on the site?

I did use to like 1up.com, though I haven't visited in some time. Hell, a long time ago, I used to even like IGN until it started to take longer to load a page on their site than it takes to level max a character in Disgaea.

Dude, this is exactly why I stopped using their list feature for collections. Do they have dial up servers or something? lol, it was hilariously bad.

Anyways, quality aside the sites had issues. IGN may be popular but their layout is nightmarish and they are tried to cover too much ground, too quickly, which hurt them a lot.
