Goodbye 1UP, Gamespy, UGO, much of IGN, etc.

I remember loving IGN before they became popular and mainstream and started covering tons of non gaming stuff. I know that makes me sound like some, "I only like stuff that's not popular" hipster.

but I seem to recall some new folks took them over, and they were never really the same after that

Anyway, along with the official death of G4 that I brought up in another topic, that is pretty shocking

I honestly don't care though.

The worst I'm afraid.
Retronauts is/was one of my favorite podcasts to listen to on the way to work.

I remember that, I think it was Newscorp or Fox that took them over. They then started acquiring a bunch of other sites. I think GameSpy was the next addition because I remember when the logo appeared on IGN.

Anyway, I haven't really read IGN for many years, but this is surprising none the less.

:( I couldn't agree more. Games, Dammit! is also necessary listening for me.

My best wishes go out to Jeremy, Bob, Jose, Ray, etc. They wouldn't know it, but they not only gave me a greater understanding of my favorite hobby, but made life a little easier to handle overall.

Thank god I have the majority of the Retronauts backlog downloaded to my Zune already. Time to get the rest before it's too late.

What is going on with all these media gaming things closing down?

It's but another sign of the impending game apocalypse. Long standing gaming sites vanishing, PS4 uses cell technology, no console shown. No used games on the Nexbox! Wii-U is a tablet and a console with remakes of Gamecube games! Goodbye Video Games.

1UP has been my go-to site for a long time, even though its quality has gone down in the past few years. I'm sure they'll all find work within the industry. As bare-bones as their staff became, it was still a pretty solid crew. I'll miss Retronauts as much as I miss GFW Radio. :(

Count me in the group of people who love Retronauts.

They can always do their own thing, and hopefully they do.

Not like I've cared about these sites in years, but it's definitely awkward and I'd imagine this is practically like closing down a studio... so some people might be out of a job? Hopefully things go well for whomever if that's the case.

I just saw this image and thought it was pretty much the way IGN was going near the end of its life -
