That was a given as they werent going with the same hardware architecture. And be too much to emulate it yet.ApolloBoy wrote:So way too much online connectivity and no backwards compatiblity with the PS3? Nope.

"Innovation" is probably the wrong word.Jmustang1968 wrote:Oh I liked using it as well. But there isn't a new media format right. I believe it should have a blu ray player again.Stark wrote:Innovation might be the wrong word for it, but I get what Dave is saying. I remember doing the same thing, where was so stoked that the PS2 played DVDs, because DVD players were still relatively expensive. Same thing with blu ray when the PS3 came out.Jmustang1968 wrote:Having a disc drive that plays movies isn't much in the way of hardware innovation. They need to stop 'innovating' with a mostly blunder like the cell chip. Hardware wise, I am pleased with the PS4. Software wise? We shall see...
I have been an early enough adopter on all PS consoles and handhelds that I have rationalized each purchase in a certain way...basically i said to myself that: Hey, even if the games suck/don't come out then at least...
PS1: I have a nice Sony CD Player.
PS2: I have a DVD Player and a second system for PS1 games
PSP: I have an awesome portable emulation machine
PS3: I have a Blu-Ray player and access to my PS1/PS2 games via HDMI
Vita: I have an awesome portable PSN/PSP/PS1/various web services machine
PS4: I have...something I already have?
So if/when I grab the PS4 I am basically gambling that it will have the games that interest me, as there was no additional feature that they talked about last night which really sells me on the system (I don't - at this point - care about the sharing or streaming stuff very much). So if the PS4 is faltering after its first year and publishers are jumping ship, then I am potentially left with a machine that doesn't have much of a library, doesn't play my old games better than my old machines (if it even plays them), and doesn't offer me access to a media format or service that I couldn't access elsewhere right now.

Bummed about the lack of Backward compatiblity. HECK i do own a B/C ps3 (well mostly anyways 80GB version and YES i do once a while put a PS2 and PS1 games in there). At the moment no redownloading the games i bought digitally. Heck alot of them dont even have super dazzling graphics. Limbo, Shatter, Earthworm Jim HD etc etc.. And having me not being able to redownload them on a PS4???? Hmmmmm not sold at the moment.

Really? I definitely had a CD player (well, my family had) well before the PS1 was released.dsheinem wrote:PS1: I have a nice Sony CD Player.
Non-backwards compatible. Can we finally get you over to our side that modern gaming is going downhill?doesn't play my old games better than my old machines (if it even plays them)

I really don't see the issue with backwards compatibility (or lack thereof). Most of us here have multiple consoles anyway. I have seven devices that play PS1 games... do I really need another?
Purchase justified!
If it'll make you feel better, I can tape a pencil sharpener to a PS4.dsheinem wrote:PS4: I have...something I already have?

Yeah, I already had two CD players, but I had a "shelf system" and a discman. I picked up a PS1 for the games, but the rationalization was that I could use it as a component-system like CD player if the games failed to materialize. I didn't have this concern for long, and never actually used the system like that.o.pwuaioc wrote:Really? No, becasue frankly I don't care anymore about BC as a major selling point (though, as I explained above, I certainly used to). That probably comes from having more disposable income now compared to when the PS2 or PS3 was released as well as the belief that I can always replace a system that breaks in the future. BC is nice for convenience's sake, but I am no longer of the mind that it should be included in a system for me to consider buying it.Non-backwards compatible. We didn't need this event to know that PS3 games wouldn't be BC. As soon as we learned no cell chip, it was a given.

I hope the PS4 has a flat top like the PS2, so i can put something on top of it, unlike the Curved PS3 shell, wtf is that!
Re: REMINDER - Playstation Event - Feb 20th @ 6 PM Eastern.
Agreed. It would be cool if they could have done a disc check and then streamed it to your PS4 via Gaikai though.Jmustang1968 wrote:We didn't need this event to know that PS3 games wouldn't be BC. As soon as we learned no cell chip, it was a given.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

They heavily suggested that they were looking into a streaming solution. I wouldn't be suprised if something like this happened for at the very least the most popular games.Stark wrote:Agreed.
