Great thread. I downloaded Silpheed, Tyrian 2000 (dat soundtrack), Raiden, Xenon, and Xenon 2 from Abandonware sites. I need to try out this Joy2Key thing though, using the keyboard is a drag.

Do any of those Japanese doujin shmups have physical releases? I think I recall a website that sold them.

I picked up Astro Avenger II at Staples today. Yes, Staples!

It's not too bad!

there is a version of Side Arms available for DOS as well.

also an old obscure shooter called Nemesis that's pretty neat, if unremarkable:

(shameless self promotion: i have sealed copies of Darius Gaiden & Side Arms available in my sale thread, as well as a disc-only copy of nemesis :) )

I listed a bunch in this post, with links to downloads (at least in the bottom half of the list, there are other genres in the top half):

Here's a few other interesting ones

Genetos: In this game, you fly through the history of shmups. It's a cool concept that runs you through the different mechanics of the genre pretty quickly.

They Came From Verminest: This is a great Galaga-style game that even has a red-blue 3D glasses mode.

Hydorah: This is a really nice Gradius clone, though many have complained it is too hard.

Cho Ren Sha 68K is awesome, but I believe there's some compatability issues with windows vista and onward (sound) if I recall correctly. If you have XP or a Virtual Machine, I recommend it highly. It's also freeware.
