Finally Got a PSP! Now What?

Post by Mendoza »

Saw that they were 99.96 on Amazon, and i've been meaning to get into this system for a few years but kept putting it off for other finacial reasons. Now it will be here in a week or so.

Any games i should prioritize so that i don't miss out on them being available?

Any accessories really necessary outside of the memory card?

Heres a short list of stuff im looking to get in the next couple of months

Final Fantasy 4 Complete

Tactics Ogre

Compilation discs of older games.

Dracula X

Final Fantasy Tactics

Darkstalkers The Chaos Tower

Lunar Silver Star Harmony

Any other suggestions for priority purchases?

Go to GameStop and you can find a sh*tload of cheap PSP games.

That's if you're not going the hacked route.

Get a screen protector too.

Are you gonna make lots of downloads? I think a 4 or 8 GB is good enough.

Get Daxter, it's the best 3D platformer on the system. Take advantage of those $15 two-pack releases. Gamestop and Amazon are your best bet for finding cheap PSP games, but check the clearance areas at Target and Best Buy as well. If you plan on downloading anything, make sure your memory card is bigger than 2 GB or you will run out of room super fast. And most of all, GET A SCREEN PROTECTOR!

I don't buy screen protectors for any of my handhelds/phones/etc. As long as you are careful, the screen will be fine. The PSP especially doesn't need one - the "real screen" is covered by a thin plastic barrier that is built into the plastic molding. If you scratch it/scuff it, you can just replace that whole piece for less than $5 and it will look brand new again.

PSP games I have most enjoyed:

Action:
God of War: Chains of Olympus
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Killzone Liberation
Resistance Retribution

Platformer:
Little Big Planet
LocoRoco
Prinny 1 and 2

Racing/Sports:
Ridge Racer
Burnout Legends
Wipeout Pulse and Pure
NBA The Inside Series

Puzzle:
Lumines I and II
Patapon 1 and 2

RPG:
Half Minute Hero
Ys I and II
Tactics Ogre
FF4 Complete
Trails in the Sky

Compilations:
Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded
Capcom Classics Collection Remixed
Capcom Puzzle World
Gradius Collection
Parodius Portable Collection (import)
SNK Arcade Classics 0 (import)
Sega Genesis Collection

I'll second Half Minute Hero as a must have, and add Gitaroo Man Lives to the pile too. Really short, but really awesome.

I got a PSP myself a few months ago and have been slowly growing my collection.
I've been focusing on Falcom games - The Legend of Heroes and Ys series. But I'm planning on getting more RPGs than I can conceivably play in the next couple years, since they're so cheap.

You might want to preorder Class of Heroes II. It's the first RPG being released by Victor Ireland (of Working Designs) fame and the physical release is going to be pretty limited.
Everything I've heard about the first one is that it's forgettable, but the second one should improve things!

Oh, my #1 suggested accessory would be a component A/V cable so you can play your games on a TV. Because I really like being able to do that!
And if you're an anime fan, this can make your friends jealous.

A large memory stick and custom firmware are all you need. You can rip your purchased games to the memory stick and play them off of it to reduce wear and tear on the umd drive.

Yeah, that should be one of the rarest RPG's on the system.

the Ace Combat games for PSP are really good.

Metal Gear: Peace Walker is fantastic!

If you have a buddy with a PSP then you can have a blast playing PixelJunk's Monsters. My friend and I used to go to town on that game together.
