Oh hey, looks like TankTankTank just went freemium in Europe. Seems like a reasonable deal - you basically get a 3 uses per day demo if you get the free download, and can buy the other parts of the game individually - multiplayer maps, other modes and the single player game all available.

The My Kong mode, where one player plays as a giant monster against the others is on a special offer at £1.59 until the 20th of February, when it'll go up to £7.99. Seems worth jumping on to me at that price. Might invest in at least one multiplayer map, plus My Kong. I wasn't interested in the single player stuff anyway.

This thread makes my first week store refund of $460 look like a very wise decision.

 Are you kidding me!! So how much would it cost to get the complete game? Seems to be more and more games {Skylanders anyone) going this route, the tease to draw you in. Worse then shareware due to the multiple purchases.

I have a few friends who bowed out 7th gen because they felt the quality of games has diminished due to forced MP or DLC structures. Sold everything off that fell within that generation and stuck with GCN and PS2.
In full agreement, this kind of sneaky marketing just prevents me from jumping into the WiiU, "PS4" or "720" as well. Looks like the Wii will be my newest Nintendo console for a long time.

Cheaper than the $50 that it is at Gamestop right now.

Questionable now if even the Gamestop release is complete enough or if it too will have additional upgrades to feel enough is in the game. alienjesus mentioned the price on just the Kong mode going up after the introductory offer. You can see where the game is going to cost by the time you purchase all the add ons.

This style of a download game is a double edged sword. Convenient quick purchase with instant new upgrade options, but at what cost?

Game will be about £30 total to download with all the parts at full price, which is the same price it was released at in shops. You can buy it cheaper online on sites like Amazon, for like £20 in some places. However, the only part I was interested in just cost me £1.59 altogether, so I'm honestly not seeing a problem here.

The parts on sale on the download are exactly the same as the ones in the retail game, just split up. If you want the whole game, buy the disc, no problem. If you don't, like me, you can buy the bits you want for less.

What "sneaky marketing"? What "diminished quality"?

Bullshit on both counts.

Marketing: If you can pick up on the sales model and understand how it works, how is it "sneaky"? Or do you just figure that you are just that much smarter than John Q. Public so that you could figure it out while others couldn't? There's nothing hidden. There's nothing sneaky. Everything should be understandable to anyone who is old enough to conduct a monetary transaction in the first place...

Quality: I've yet to see a compelling argument that a game's quality at release has significantly suffered becasue of release day (or later) DLC. It's even harder to argue that games without DLC (from old gens) are objectively better simply becasue they don't have DLC or "forced Multiplayer" (whatever the hell that is).

Same boring old arguments that folks around here kick around ad nauseum. If you don't like the industry's sales techniques or the current games, then that's fine. But don't claim that they are underhanded/sneaky or of low quality becasue of the way they are released...

I got the impression from this post that it will be 15.90GBP to buy the parts to make the full game. You can read the entire thread for some thoughts behind this new model. Apparently it's out now in the European eShop.

Total cost of components:
6 x multiplayer maps at £1.59 each (= £9.54)
2 x Monster battle maps at £3.19 each ( = £6.38)
1 x Story Mode at £7.99
1 x My Kong mode at £1.59 currently, or £7.99 after Feb 20th.

So the total at the minute is £25.50. It'll be £31.90 when the price goes up.

You actually get 1 multiplayer map to use in any multiplayer mode except My Kong, and one Monster Battle map as part of the free download. THey basically function as a demo, and can be played 3 times a day. If you buy a single piece of the DLC though, they become unlocked for unlimited play, which is the main reason I picked up My Kong mode.

For what it's worth, My Kong is a fun little distraction at £1.59, but no way is it ever worth the £7.99 full price. That's my general thoughts really - buy one piece of the dlc for cheap and you'll have a nice silly game you can play with friends on occasion, but if you want the lot, I'd wait for a price drop on the disc version and get that.

And for what it's worth, getting unlimited plays of the multiplayer for £1.59 sure beats spending a pound each per play on the arcade cabinet

I just wish you could disable the player pictures.
