I'd probably still get retro games, but dump them on my PC and play them emulated which is what I've already gotten in the habit of doing. I like collecting games, but I'm really lazy about getting off my butt, putting the game I want to play in the system, and playing it. I much prefer just opening up a menu with a list of games in it, selecting what I want to play, and having at it. Yet, I still like having the physical copy of the game in many cases.
I'm sure a lot of people will think it weird, but it's the way I've been doing things for a while now. So I guess I've sort of been doing what the OP has been asking anyway. :p
Could you tolerate gaming exclusively with modern hardware?

I do the same - emulate games that I actually do own, that is. It prevents wear and tear, preserves the battery, etc. I play through Chrono Trigger on SNES9X about once every two years or so, but haven't touched my actual cart since 2001.

Lately I have been giving the Wii a lot of my time, but with the WiiU now out I guess its already last generation.Nintendork666 wrote:Pretend you were forced to game with only the latest of technology: Wii-U's, PC's, Vitas, 3DS's, tablets, PS3's, and 360's. How satisfied could you keep yourself with only what companies are offering today?
Recently, I upgraded to an HDtv which only has component/HDMI inputs. My old CRT is still around, but it's so heavy/on it's last leg that I have little will to ever turn it back on, and my spare resides in my grandmother's basement. Because of this, most of my non-portable gaming time has been dedicated to my PS3 or Wii (which isn't current-gen anymore, but whatever). My older consoles are packed away for now, excluding PS1/PS2/GC games, because I have ways of playing those through component if need be.
The game industry is very exciting at the moment, and I don't feel much urge to focus on the past. Any of you doing the same, if not, how would you react to doing so?
I still prefer the older games in their original consoles, I think due to features that cannot be reproduced. The huge Atari 5200 Trakball, Gamecube Pacman VS or any of the GC games that have the added benefit of the GBA attached, Dreamcast Lightgun with "machine gun" rapid fire built in for House Dead, this can go on and on. Then there are the many games that have not been released as a new "HD" or download rerelease, so many to rediscover.
Get that poor CRT out of the basement already! Your older consoles look best on the tube.

I'd get out of gaming completely if that were the case, no joke.Nintendork666 wrote:Pretend you were forced to game with only the latest of technology: Wii-U's, PC's, Vitas, 3DS's, tablets, PS3's, and 360's. Re: Could you tolerate gaming exclusively with modern hardwa
I could easily tolerate it since that's pretty much what I do at this point.
I know I'm in the minority here, but, a nice PC with a bunch of peripherals and emulators has been suiting me great. Sure I miss the sound of popping in cartridges now and then (I keep a few systems stored for this reason) but for the most part I've left old hardware behind.
Only modern games on a year by year basis though? No, I don't think I could do that.

Older. Not wiser.

I won't say PC because it doesn't seem fair. If I really want to feel restrictive at all I will choose one dedicated gaming machine. That machine would be the PS Vita. Although still not up to par with support, you can get some of PS1's library on it. You get most of the PSP's library. And you get to take advantage of the currently supported product (if you really want to even call it that, a discussion for another day).
The Final Fantasy's of old, the whore I am for Disgaea, the entire collection of Persona, and the recently released Jet Set Radio just to give you a little taste of what I mean.

i think about this all the time. i don't know if i'd be 100% ok with just having a 360 but i'd manage.

I could on a PC, but console only I probably could not. I typically stay about half a gen behind on most big titles, mostly because of price. But Steam and GoG have a nasty habit of doing big sales...
