I'd put them together too. One of those games almost was gonna be in the Shmup of The Month lineup last year, but lost out to Dragon Blaze. I've been practicing on MAME the past few nights now that Dragon Spirit NES is finished. Plus, I want to revisit some of the older score threads already posted and see if I can't do any better.

After updating a few of the score threads, I've been wanting to do this too, although I need to get some Dragon Blaze in first. Let me know what you decide to play and I'll give you some friendly competition though! Maybe we can get another "19xx" instance going

I was looking at Darius Gaiden since I did not have a score there, and I thought I had put one on. While I'm in Taito Legends 2, probably Gekirindan again as well. I'll look through the list.

19XX :? Yeah I remember that, the back and forth!

Dove in to a bunch of Blazing Lazers and it was great. It's not the hardest shmup in the world, but it's a nice relaxing game. Getting a hankering for a random assortment of R-Type games as well lately.

Real life arcade shmups!

Galaga (on a 20 year reunion machine) - 151,610 - Stage 18 (of course me and cell phone pics don't mix)
Image
1943 Kai - 1,201,700 - Stage 6 (boss) - that stage rips you up and spits you out!

Don't know if people are aware of it, but there's a Chinese hack of Battle Garegga called '1945 Part-2' which has been playable on MAME in recent updates. I've been trying it out in Shmupmame 4 and it's kinda fun. Differences:

(1) Your main shot is fully powered-up at the start; (2) You start with more bombs; (3) The C button changes your ship, so you can flick between different characters during the game!; (4) There is no button to control the options; instead the options automatically switch to the search type when you have 3 or 4 of them; (5) You start off with two shields! There are two icons above the bomb counter that indicate your shields. You can take two hits before you actually lose a life...

I made a quick video of the first two stages. You can switch to Gain to exploit the flamingos in Stage 2, then switch back to whichever character you want :)

So far I've made it to Stage 6, with a score of over 6 million. I might actually be able to clear this version. On the other hand, it still has rank...

I'm getting my butt kicked by Axelay's vertical levels. Something about the perspective and the way the enemies and obstacles enter from the horizon has got my brain confused. I don't realize they're right on top of me until I'm dead. I'm wondering when my mind will make the adjustment.

My love for the music and my eagerness to see more bosses has me pressing onward.
