Could you tolerate gaming exclusively with modern hardware?

My computer is nowhere near powerful enough to emulate anything beyond the n64. However, I could get by with just my wii/gamecube games. I wouldn't be very happy about it, but I would manage.
Edit: oh, and the Wii Virtual Console/softmod. But my classic controller dpad doesn't work properly, so I really only play Nes/Master System/Turbografx games on it.
Consoles: N64, Wii, Dreamcast, PS2, SNES, Saturn, Genesis, PS3, NES, Wii U, 2600, PS4
Handhelds: Game Boy Advance, 3DS, PSP, New 3DS

Xbox360 (BC with most Xbox games)
PS3 (Full PS2/PS1 BC)
Wii (GC BC, decent N64 VC selection, able to very accurately emulate 2600, NES, GB, GBC, GBA, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, Turbographx 16 CD/SCD, and more)

... I think I would actually have more games at hand if I were forced to only play on current-gen hardware.

I could, but I wouldn't be as happy with it as I am now. According to RF Generation's stats, 68% of my collection is from 2005 or earlier. So obviously, I'd lose a lot of favorites.

Only gaming on current hardware would be a lot more tolerable on the tail end of a generation like we are now than it would be at the beginning of one. Doing it this year would be a lot better than doing it next year.

So you're allowed to emulate stuff? I dont see what the big deal would be in that case, just get a USB adapter for your Neo Geo, Saturn, Genesis, SNES, Playstation etc controllers and play the old games on your computer on an emulator with a legit controller.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I can't afford current-gen gaming, unless it is on sale on Steam.

Vast majority of current-gen games I buy are around the $20 or less range. Talking new here. Once in a while I'll pick up a $60 new release, but even then, I pay about as much on average for a current gen game as I do for a retro one.

I could easily get by with only a PS3 or PS Vita or PC. If I were stuck with ONLY a 3DS or Wii U I would probably stop gaming. And yes, I own both of those.

I only play retro stuff now - I hardly touch anything Dreamcast and later except for handhelds and some retro-looking stuff on PC. If I had to only get by, I'd be fine, I guess, emulating on a PC, but I'd probably not get any modern systems. The more recent stuff I do have (DS Lite, Wii) are late additions and are for only a few things, and they complement the overall collection. But without it as a whole, I'm sure I'd just go back to emulating.

Between the Virtual Console on Wii, XBox Live Arcade on XBox 360 plus backwards compatibility, and the GBA slot on my DS; I think I could manage if I had to. Wouldn't be nearly as cool as my personal retro collection, but I could still get my fix. (I don't have a PS3, but if I did backwards compatibility and the Playstation Classics downloads would help, too.) Does the Atari Flashback 4 count as a modern console? Because I have that, too (with 75 games on it).
