Well, I'm sure hackers will figure out how to work around the always-online thing once the online is gone. I mean, PSP Go owners are already set for when PSN abandons PSP.

What would be a lot more likely is that the games would be bound to your user account, not the hardware itself. You'd probably just have to log in under your account to play something in your library, not bring your hardware. If I recall, XBL already allows for this.

How many would actually need to be rereleased, versus simply never having been taken off the service in the first place? I know there are some, but far as I recall they're mostly victims of expired license agreements than deliberate decisions to deny gamers access to them.

I'm thinking that the situation will be far more one of having an account, like one's Steam or Apple account, that follows the user to new device(s) while retaining previously purchased content.

When all these XBLA/PSN titles from this gen become "retro" there's going to be a lot more warez/roms hardware mods/hacks involved in the scene to play/access these titles. I think that "side" of the culture will be much more tolerated as a result... Both those things will probably happen. Truth be told, if government policies concerning copyright, DRM, and EULAs weren't such a travesty I wouldn't care nearly so much. As it stands though, most retrogaming taking place on the original consoles would be technically illegal. That's a sad state of affairs in my opinion. People shouldn't be required to break laws to enjoy old media in it's original format.

I can handle annoying industry policies, or annoying government policies, but desperately hope to not have both!

Don't give them any ideas.

I almost wouldn't be surprised if they went with something similar to that $99 down $15 monthly subscription fee for the next console. They could easily sell the system for a loss on launch and recoup money within a year or two of just the substitution I'm sure. It would suck but at least you would actually feel like you were getting something for paying for xbox live.

Scratch that...just noticed "games will still be made available to purchase in physical form." I would think this would still impact Gamestop and others...why pre-order or go to the store when you can download it without getting off your ass.

We already have that this gen. Many people would rather own an actual disc, myself included.

For a lot of people it isn't even "would rather have the disc" and is more the limited space on consoles compared to the size of games. Downloading once and leaving it on the system for all time is a benefit for the average consumer. But running out of space, deleting a game, and then redownloading it later when you want to play it again is a pain in the ass.

I think that's why Nintendo made it possible to save virtual console games to an SD card, so you wouldn't have to download it again. Good idea, that.

Well, if they won't accept used games, what is the benefit for retailers to even keep them in their stores? Unless if they sell them to stores for much lower than retail price, this next console will make retailers very little money in any way, other than accessory sales. Also, this might hurt some publishers if there is no trade-in because now many people will wait for sales for certain games, or just wait for the price of a game to drop in price altogether. My opinion on this? Okay, cool. Go do it. Watch many retailers refuse to carry the console after the first few shipments, and any other console that doesn't do this will make significantly more money in the end for that reason alone. I really hope Sony doesn't do this. God, I really hope Sony doesn't do this.

Also, on a side note, I can see there being a lawsuit against microsoft if they stop online support for older games. They just made previous purchases unusable.
