It's been rumored, but not confirmed, that Sony is going to do this on the Playstation 4, but now it's official for the Xbox 3. Nintendo has a great opportunity here. If gamers get mad enough about this, all Nintendo has to do is promise never to do it with the WiiU and I bet they get a lot more sales.

So Microsoft is going to be paying Royalties to Sony then due to blu-ray right?

I would kinda like to be able to, you know, still purchase games for my Nextbox 15 years from now. This would make that impossible. I don't like it one bit nope.
Sony doesn't actually "own" the blu ray format. Microsoft would be paying the BDDA I think, which is a group comprised of a big pile of different electronics makers, including Sony.Hazerd wrote:So Microsoft is going to be paying Royalties to Sony then due to blu-ray right?

This is still rumor and not official. While it may be likely, I would hesitate on calling it 'official'

Everything about this sounds terrible. Hopefully it isn't true.

Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
We have two next-gen systems rumored to block used games. If one does and one doesn't, my choice as to which console to buy will be extremely easy.

I don't think they have official information from MS on that either, though it seems like it's not too far fetched.
It could also go in favor of MS (and probably Sony) if publishers prefer it. Make something an XBox exclusive and know that you get a cut of all sales...or port to weaker Wii U hardware and have the secondary market eat into profits to boot.
If you consider Steam sales, PS+ pricing/instant game library, and so on, the standard pricing models could get shaken up too.
Obviously, it's potentially a big negative for collecting. Very hard to say for the long term too. Though, in theory, XBL, PSN, etc could easily become staple services for decades, there's not much precedent to go on for predicting whether or not they will.
I'm more inclined to assume that, with both Sony and MS going to x86 (apparently), the architecture for future consoles will just be standard enough for their successors to keep running the old software, kinda like Nintendo has been doing.
Assuming that they actually market it as a Blu-ray drive, they would, though Sony is only one of a number of companies the royalties would go to. I kind of doubt MS would pull a Nintendo and use the tech without branding/movie playback in order to avoid paying fees.So Microsoft is going to be paying Royalties to Sony then due to blu-ray right?
For every gamer who gets up in arms about stuff like that, there are plenty more who will just follow the games they want to play. This kind of model is already the effective system for a lot of PC gaming, for XBLA/PSN/Virtual Console/etc, for iOS/Android/Windows RT, and so on.If gamers get mad enough about this, all Nintendo has to do is promise never to do it with the WiiU and I bet they get a lot more sales.

Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
That would be a horrible policy for gamers.
It's bad for the used game market, it's bad for sharing games with friends, it's bad for consumer rights, it's bad for collecting, and it's bad for preservation.
No sir, I don't like it.

Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
If the new Sony console has the same policy I will still buy it. On the other hand, I will only get the new Microsoft console if it gets some great Japanese exclusives. Like more shmups.
Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
If they do adopt the Steam model on the next Xbox that's fine AS LONG AS they also feature the same kinds of regular sales. I have bought maybe one Steam game a year at anything close to a full retail MSRP, preferring instead to wait and buy stuff at 66% or 75% off or so...by contrast I probably purchase one game a month on average at full retail MSRP on consoles.
