F#$%! YLOD Strikes Again! (opinions needed)

Post by 8bit »

After just getting my original backwards compatible 60gb ps3 repaired for the first time early last november, it has died again!!!

The place I took it to was Another Castle up in Seattle WA which is a very reputable retro and modern game store. I took it to them specifically and spent more than I would have anywhere else ($80) for the repair because I wanted a reliable fix but obviously that hasn't panned out. I called them and told them it died again after ~75 days of light use. And even though they only offer a 60 day warranty in writting, they said I could bring it back in to have it fixed again. The problem is I live in San Diego now, and soon Dallas, so I am no where near them to bring it back in. I would have to pay for shipping both ways and buy an appropriate box and packing materials

Now I am debating... should I....
1) Send it back to Another Castle, pay for shipping both ways, and hopefully get a better fix. Estimated cost $60 + turn around time. Bonus:They are held responsible to spending their time fixing it again.

2) Fix it somewhere else locally in Dallas once I get there. Probably would cost me $60 but I'd save the trouble of packing and shipping. I worry places wont give me any kind of guarantee on their work since it's been "repaired" before.

3) Suck it up and let my beautiful baby go by just selling her for parts. Either buy a slim ps3 or another b/c ps3 that has never had issues. From what I read transferring data between hard drives is not possible so I am just going to have to lose all of the PSN+ games I had that can't be re-downloaded and be forced to re-download a ton of things I had paid for.

What do yall think I should do? :(

If you love her let her go. Really you would be better off to get one of the new slim edition systems. The one that is still a front loader. That's all IMO of course
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)

Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping! :)

Wait what? You can totally transfer data between consoles. Its pretty simple if you use the ethernet method. I have done it and I think noise had to do it before. Google it up you can find directions on Sony's website.

Um ... that only works if both consoles are working.

Yeah I hate the new super slim design so thats a no brainer! I'll just really miss having the backwards compatibility.

Exactly. And just pulling the hard drive and putting in a new system forces you to format the drive. This sucks because I had 130GB used on a 160GB drive.

I'd try and put it on life support long enough to transfer your data. If you're a handy guy, open it up and take a heat gun to it. http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/ ... p/30856175

Alternatively, there is the oven method if you don't have a heat gun or can't buy/borrow one.

Hopefully get it running, go buy a Slim model, and transfer everything. Break up the Fat for parts to get some money back.

Wow, it's too bad you aren't local because I never would've charged you $80 for that repair. In my experience, I've never had one of these fail on me again after I repaired them either. To be fair, the oldest one I've done was about a year ago but it is still running. I have one client that keeps his fatty PS3 in a very confined space and it gets incredibly hot. It is still fine after several months now.

I think you need to weigh whether or not what you have on your old PS3 is worth $60. If it isn't worth that then you might just want to grab the front loader slim PS3 before they are phased out as well.

It may sound strange but the oven method works extremely well.

No need to convince me my friend. I've cooked many a-360 in my day. It's the quickest and a decently reliable way to fix an RROD without much effort.

I am extremely hesitate to do the over method... It's silly but this PS3 has been one of my absolute favorite pieces of hardware ever so it would pain me if I fried it or if I took it all apart and it didn't work ever again. I guess I'd have nothing to loose if I am going to sell it for parts but I am probably more inclined to just pay someone to fix it (with the agreement that I dont have to pay them if they dont get it back up and running).

Bah I wish I wasn't so attached to it or that I never really used the added features it provides... I am going to have to work on that because no other console breaking has made me so disappointed. It's just a ps3.... it's just a ps3.... its just a.... lol.
