I definitely prefer the first. Besides the time management thing, which I honestly think was a crucial aspect of pikmin (the dungeons in 2 were a trial in slow tedium, just slowly clearing out a path and making it safe, then sweeping around the empty floor looking for the treasure), Pikmin 2 lost any of the sense of atmosphere and exploration the first had in my opinion. In the first, you spent a lot of time exploring the world, finding the hidden treasures and working out how to get them back all whilst managing your pikmin to destroy walls, build bridges and growing new pikmin in between. In the second, you walked in a fairly straight line through the overworld killing enemies until you reached a dungeon, where you walked around slowly killing things again. The world in Pikmin 1 felt natural, whereas the world in the second was full of surreal floating platforms and semi-mechanical monsters. I hope the third is more like the first tbh.Dylan wrote:The challenge of Pikmin 2 is more intertwined with actually gaining pieces and exploring dungeons rather than with a time limit. Enemy patterns are more difficult in Pikmin 2 and traps are deadlier (especially because of the introduction of electricity as an instant kill for pikmin). The bosses in Pikmin 1 aren't pushovers, but some of the later bosses in Pikmin 2 will flat out destroy you in seconds if you don't have a plan going in. These elements work well with the dungeon system, as the challenge starts shifting more towards carefully utilizing your pikmin and trying to keep enough to make it to the bottom and pass the final obstacle. Where Pikmin 1 is about time management, Pikmin 2 is about resource management. Sure you have theoretically infinite resources on the surface, but once you're down below all you've got is the 100 you brought with you.Zing wrote:I greatly prefer the first game. The second game has no tension. The first game has a time limit. The second game, I just felt like I was dicking around and having to farm for purple/white to get some of the objects. I actually stopped playing after I "beat" the game because it was no longer fun. The first game, I would replay over and over.

I prefer 1. I'll echo what everyone else has said about the time clock. It added pressure to explore and do as much as you can in one day.
I've actually replayed 1 four or five times trying to see how few days I take to get 100% items. I think I got it down to 18 or 19 days as my best time.
2 was okay. More of the same but no pressure put on the player. I beat the game but didn't go for the 100% completion because it got boring tbh.

I concede that there are definite points where Pikmin 1 shines over 2. I will say I'm surprised people are so into the time limit though, I honestly didn't think that it added that much pressure to the game (especially because you could just load a save if the day didn't go well). I had three days to spare when I beat it the first time and I even collected the extra parts.alienjesus wrote: I definitely prefer the first. I will admit that Pikmin 2 has dungeon crawling and treasure collecting, which are two elements I'm personally predisposed to liking.

Its not a hard game, but it is a lot of fun.
Plus, women love all the cute little animals and how they help you.
I'd say 90% of the people who played the game enjoyed it. Not the best game by any means, but has a unique game play that is very catchy and fun.
