The later Saturn cases, the plastic ones, were pretty good but the earlier cardboard things were terrible I agree.
Having just got a 360 for christmas I went to go and check out the used games in the local shop and I was shocked at the poor condition of the boxes on the shelves. The were cracked and broken, the transparent plastic was torn and they were all covered in gunk from stickers or had been damaged by stickers being pulled off..
But it terms of worse cases I would have to agree that PAL DC and PS1 cases are the worst out there, not counting the cardboard boxes that Nintendo liked to use for the cart console's games.
which platform has the worst amount of badly damaged cases?

Really? They are probably the easiest to keep in good shape.JC48573 wrote:Based on your own experience, which platform is more likely to have cd cases that are in bad shape?
I will have to go with xbox, 360, gamecube, and the wii. I say this because I had to replace many of the cases.
This. I have lots of Dreamcast games that are disc only, as the prongs always break off, and even if they don't there is usually a hinge missing. The actual "look" of the cases is good, nice and chunky, but the practicality is shocking.alienjesus wrote:PAL Dreamcast games without a doubt. Even when the case isn't completely shattered (which is unlikely, they seem to crack from the tiniest things), the hinges are normally gone. And if neither of those has happened, you can be sure the spindle for the disc is missing a few prongs and your disc will be bouncing around loose.
PAL Sega cases were awful after the Mega Drive. As bad as the Dreamcast game cases are, the Saturn cases are even worse. The difference is that the Dreamcast cases break really easily, whereas the Saturn cases are unfit for purpose even when in prime condition

Well, outside of cardboard cases, definetly sega CD/ Saturn cases.
I usually hunt local game stores for dirt cheap sports games with good cases to swap out. I'm not the only one am I?
But even worse seems to be old PS1 long cases. For whatever reason, almost every one of those cases has the glue coming undone from the plastic inlay part. And if not that, the fibers are always roughed up on the edges or scratched deeply.
I have a near mint copy of King's Field in one of those long boxes. It's my favorite ps1 game, but I'm scared to death to touch the damn thing.

Because you can easily replace cracked or damaged Ps1 cases because they're just normal CD cases?Hazerd wrote:Playstation, how am i the only one who thinks this? collecting PS1 games is madness!

Being in the US, I obviously agree with the jewel longboxes for SCD/SAT games. Paper wise, Odyssey² boxes. They aren't just mostly normal boxes like NES and SNES, they slide together to create a holder space around the cart and don't stay together very well. They started coming with scotch tape on the corners to hold them together but of course the first time they get a little squashed those tabs are all bent up and it won't stay together. A nice box can look nice, but most are beat and kind of fall apart as you open them.

I've never come across one where the middle gray piece was broken, just the outer clear parts. Those are just the back of a normal single jewel case.Hazerd wrote:Not the double jewel cases!AppleQueso wrote:Because you can easily replace cracked or damaged Ps1 cases because they're just normal CD cases?Hazerd wrote:Playstation, how am i the only one who thinks this? collecting PS1 games is madness!

I would honestly have to say any cases that utilize plastic sleeves (Gamecube, Wii, PS2, etc etc). It always seems like the plastic gets damaged, some how, some way.
