I do consider the Wii last last gen. It was just a Gamecube that was overclocked with Motion controls.
The N64 and Dreamcast may as well be their own generation. They were more powerful than what was out at the time. But Less powerful than what was in the pipeline.
Jaguar, 3DO, CD32 ect. the Pre PSX 32 bit consoles, I count as being part of the SNES-Genesis Era.
Don't ask my logic or reasoning for it. I'll likely write a very confusing Eassy explaining why that I'll look at a few hours later only to find it made no sense.

...so why not just stick to the generation numberings that people, you know, already agree upon?

I'm Like Dr House, I play by my own rules. Even if my own rules make no sense and make everyone hate me.

Power is a really bad way to break up generations anyway. Release window is far more important.
The Wii has a lot of elements common to 7th gen consoles anyway. Namely extensive internet connectivity, large downloadable games, a large amount of on-board storage (no memory cards!), wireless controllers as standard, etc. Sure, it's not very powerful and not HD, but it feels very much like a 7th gen system.

Well, generation is called a generation for a reason. There are going to be a group of kids growing up who are not too familiar with PS3/360/Wii, and will grow up playing Wii-U and 3DS and what not. Generation really has to do with what is relevant rather how powerful something is.
Though out of curiosity Rev, where would you put in the microconsoles like the Piston?

I guess I can attempt to give you some sort of time line. Rather than be a smart ass about it.Violent By Design wrote:Well, generation is called a generation for a reason. The Rev Controversial video game generation timeline
Prehistory- Pong Consoles,Odyssey
Not sure about the micro consoles
Early Era- 2600, 5200, 7800, Coleco, Intellevision and others.
Golden Era- NES, Master System
This is where it gets complicated as...
Silver Era- PC Engine Duo, SNES, Megasis, Jaguar. 3DO, Neo Geo
Early Modern Era- PS1, Saturn, N64
Sega undefined Era- Dreamcast
I don't know where to place the Dreamcast on my timeline. it was right in the middle
2 years after the N64, 2 years before the PS2. So it feels like it's it's own Console Generation.
Modern Era- PS2, Gamecube, Wii, XBOX
Current Gen- Wii U, 360, PS3
Where do Handhelds and Microconsoles go (Piston, Gamestick, Ouya), I'm not sure.
I think they should have their own timeline as they are a very different technology.
Nintendo kinda screws the Timeline up The Wii and Wii U are underpowered and were considered by the mainstream line to be Next Gen. But really they use older technology and slap a gimmick on to bring a new Experence. So I can't include the Wii with the 360 and PS3 there's too vast a difference in power. Same with the Wii U and what is probably in the pipeline.
Same reason I can't really place Handhels and Microconsoles.

Trying to be a unique snowflake is nice I guess, but there's absolutely no reason to have your own definitions for generations. All it does is over-complicate discussion and probably derails things any time you have to sit down and explain it.
"Prehistory" would also probably be better defined as stuff like Tennis for Two, SpaceWar, and any of the stuff made on university mainframes in the 50s/60s.

VITA SUXXORS! No really, im just not interested in paying 250$ for a handheld with a small library of games and could very well be 99$ in two years if sony does not nut up. I had the same problem with the psp when it first came out. Why the fuck would I want to play a crippled console port on a handheld. I don't. And since allot of the best games for it are already on consoles or just spinoffs of console games, what is the point? At least the psp had some awesome RPG support.o.pwuaioc wrote:It's clearly not everyone. If you're counting the small handful of people on this forum, I've seen literally every console bashed here. Some people don't care for the Master System, some shrug their shoulders at the Genesis, the N64 had a whole thread necessary to defend itself, the Dreamcast regularly gets shot down, the Xbox and 360 and PS3 and Wii and Wii U and 3DS all are derided here by some, or were at some point. The slow start for the Vita is nothing different. People are too damn demanding. FFS, get a life. There's a huge library of unplayed games numbering in the thousands. Anyone who complains that the Vita doesn't have very many good games yet clearly have amnesia.BoringSupreez wrote:Really, if you have to convince everyone who doesn't own your system that it doesn't suck, you've already lost. This is not a good position for Sony to market from.

Well I never like the Main stream 1st generation - 6th. That's why I started to develop my own in hopes some how some way others might accept it. My timeline probably looks like the Mainstream one until the Dreamcast, Wii and Wii U came along to screw it up.AppleQueso wrote:Trying to be a unique snowflake is nice I guess, but there's absolutely no reason to have your own definitions for generations. Like Handhelds and the new Microconsoles that use Android. Anything developed on Mainframes pre Oddessy would probably go on a Separate computer timeline. I'd probably define those by Processor types rather than OS ect.

The "mainstream" generation list is based on relevance and release windows. Your generation list is based on random piles of arbitrary exceptions.
