Group Project - Every Street Fighter II Variation/Port

Post by racketboy »

This is just something I thought would be fun and we'll see how it goes...
What would you guys think about trying to capture/round out screenshots of every port and/or version of Street Fighter II that we can get our hands on.
And if you have the ability to play a certain home port, share what you think was good and bad about it -- graphics, controls, music, etc.

Does this sound do-able?

Do you want to compare Japanese, American, and Euro versions of each release as well? And what about including all the different arcade variations?

I sampled a bunch of the logo screens out of Mame a few years back. Made a little screensaver that cycled through all the official and unofficial versions of SF2 as a joke. Maybe I could fire up Mame and write some impressions of all the hacked variants.

Rainbow Edition > All other SF2 versions. I would love to get an actual board of that game.

The hack versions are great fun at parties. Gief has crazy reach on his throws, makes for some very enteraining matches until someone figures out you can put 7 fireballs on the screen at once and totally lock down their opponent. Gotta kick that sucka off!

I've got one...but it's temperamental and needs the old CPS1 kick harness.

I just got a Genesis lot that includes SFII: Special Championship Edition, which was a Genesis exclusive. However, I only have a three button pad at the moment, so I'll need to hold judgment until I find a proper six button pad. So far, the sprites seem smaller and less detailed/colorful than their SNES cousins; however, it did have the privilege of being the first console port to include the bosses as playable characters.

I also have Street Fighter II for the SNES and Super Street Fighter II X for the Dreamcast. Both are practically arcade perfect ports, although SFII for SNES is hard to go back to, considering how awful slow it was. I know there are some nay-sayers that put SSFIIX for DC under the same game for Saturn, but considering how hard it is to get a hold of the Saturn version, I think I'll deal with it. (Plus, X-Arcade doesn't have an adapter for the Saturn... they really should get on that.)

Edit: Don't forget the versions that were more that just a little crippled by their hardware, such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Game Boy and Sega Master System.

Yeah, after so many days in Turbo, it's tough to go back. Might I suggest you pick up Super Street Fighter 2 on the SNES? In my opinion, it was an excellent update to the classic.
