Combat Similar to Tales of Series.

Post by TheGrimAngel »

I love the Tales of series. Especially the combat. Are there any other RPG out there with similar style combat?

Check out the first two Star Ocean games - both have been ported to the PSP, that's the easiest way to get 'em.

I've never played any of the Star Oceans. Is the one for the xbox 360 worth while?

Eh... notice he specifically said the first two, lol.

Also not sure about the series as a whole, but I've played Grandia 2 and I think that definitely fits.

I have no idea. I can only vouch for the first two.

Star Ocean 1 is also on Super Famicom. Star Ocean 2 is also on PS1.

Here's a little video that shows some combat:

Note the similarities to the Tales games - "real time" battles that you can pause to bring up spells/items and AI controlled secondary characters.

Star Ocean on the 360 also has a Tales-like battle system, though the viewpoint is behind the character, so it's most like Tales of Graces f.

The Ps2 Star Ocean is completely awful.

I don't think I've ever heard anything good about the 360 one.

I liked the 360 one, though I'd highly recommend the PS3 version instead if you can get it. No disc swapping (which gets bad end game if you start trying to do crafting, as you end up flipping discs when you transition between planets) and the Japanese voices are much better for a few of the characters (which follow archetypes we don't really use much hear, so no one knows how to voice them well).

Is it dual audio?

Yeah the third game had one of the worst dubs I've seen, watched a friend play a chunk of that one and it looked pretty awful. Always been curious about 4 though.

Did you make it to the twist?

Shayamalan himself can't top where that story ends up going.
