What was the last movie you've seen?

On Saturday I saw Django Unchained, which met, and in some cases, exceeded expectations.

It's really very good, isn't it? I had my doubts since Inglorious Basterds was "good" not "great" and QT seems to be stuck in a "revenge-film" rut. I was expecting something on par with IB, not something as awesome as I what we got.

It woud probably rank below a single, solitary, edited Kill Bill film for me. Since that's not what we got, it's better than just Pt. 1 or Pt. 2.

My wife and I watched another Criterion film on Hulu+ last night:

I Married a Witch (1942) - This was a very fun, zany, "tuxedoes and martinis" romantic comedy in the style of "Bringing Up Baby." The story involves a witch and her father placing a curse on a puritan's blood line so that all of the men in the family will marry poorly. After the witch and her father are freed from the tree that has been imprisoning them for 270 years, they set about tormenting the descendant of the puritan who had them burned at the stake (Frederic March). Thinking that the most delightful torment would be to seduce March and thereby ruin both his upcoming wedding and his political ambitions, the young witch resumes her corporeal form (Veronica Lake ) and sets about seducing March. Her plan backfires, and she ends up falling for March instead - much to her sorcerer father's dismay. Zaniness ensues, and everything ends well. In short, it was a very fun "tuxedoes and martinis" romantic comedy, and I would recommend it to anyone that is a fan of the genre. (Also, Veronica Lake is as cute as a button, and she looks absolutely stunning in a variety of evening gowns throughout the movie...so, it has that going for it as well.)

VOL. 2 is like EMPIRE. It's not its own thing, but it is. It can stand alone without VOL. 1, but yet feels like the icing on the cake to VOL. 1. Again, I'd have to watch them back to back to say which is better.

Off the top of my head I would say that each QT film has a certain "jive" to them. I prefer the jive of KBV2. But as far as performances go, the characters in UNCHAINED were the best since PULP FICTION. I actually think Foxx was the weakest link, and he was still amazing.

But the more I think about it, I prefer the style of VOL. 2, but I need to watch it again. It's like an homage to an homage to a cluster fuck of homages (and it WORKS!!!).




edit* AH! I've got an explanation that makes sense (for once).

KILL BILL VOL. 2 left me wanting more. Even though the story was told, revenge was taken, I didn't want it to end. At the end of DJANGO I enjoyed the hell out of it, but was done.

I saw Les Mis and Zero Dark Thirty last night. Both were good - maybe very good - but not great.

That said, Anne Hathaway was phenomenal in Les Mis, and her ability to make me well up at a song I'd heard many many times before was just surreal. Chills.

Les Miserables is fantastic. Somehow polished but rough. Great performances all around, but I agree Hathaway was a stand out.

ZD30's last 30 minutes are a feast, but that middle hour or so seems to drag on forever.



KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE

This movie provides us with a visual definition of the word Raunchy. The quick gags work better than the drawn out ones, but they all usually work even after repeated viewings. I don't know if this type of movie could be pulled off nowadays. Yeah, MOVIE 43 (or is it MOVIE 42? Either way I don't care) is supposed to be way over the top, but every joke in the trailer is an old one.

If you enjoy boobs and silly satire, Kentucky Fried Movie is definitely for you.

"Show me your nuts" still gets me every time.

If she doesn't win best supporting it will be a travesty. Hollywood also needs to stop wasting her in non-singing roles.
