Especially considering the menu load sound is the same as the Goron sounds from Ocarina of Time!
For a home console I would choose the N64. It is super sturdy, has its fair share of expansions (which I love about a console), and there are so many awesome editions and colors.
For a handheld, definitely the GBA. Once again lots of colors and editions, but also ridiculously well built. I'm not even sure if a jackhammer could break a GBA lol. Very simple and functional design as well.

I used to have a GBA (my first handheld system, I believe), and while I always preferred the 8-bitness of the older gameboy games, the GBA itself is very tough. Mine has been through hell over the years: there's scratches (deep ones too) on the plastic, the battery cover is broken, and it had sustained its fair share of spills.
I parted ways with it recently though, in favor of the SP so that I don't have to play under a lamp all the time.
My favorite console as far as hardware goes is tough. Even though I absolutely LOVE the Sega Saturn, my favorite system is the Sega Genesis Model 3. It is just great. Given that you cannot use the 32x or the Sega CD with it, its still so good. It plays every game that I like on the Genesis and it doesnt take up that much room on my stand. There is something that it so appealing about the console that just draws me to it.
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)
Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping!
I tend to break this out into cart based and disc based systems. (Yes the Genesis had both, but it didn't top the list for me anyway.)
Cart systems:
I was always partial to the Odyssey2 for the overall look, controller, and best of all, carts with handles.
I liked the N64 for its sturdiness - runner up.
Disc systems:
I'd go with the Gamecube for all the reasons mentioned in this thread.
Systems: Pong, Odyssey2, Atari 2600, NES, CDX, SNES, N64, Saturn, DC, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, GCN, Wii, Xbox360, OUYA
Handhelds: GB, GBC, GBA, DS lite, DSi, Virtual Boy (<< is that even a portable?)
EM Pinballs: Bally Dixieland, Gottlieb Flying Carpet
SS Pinball: GTB Circus, GTB Count-Down, GTB Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Stern Lectronamo, Stern Galaxy, Bally Black Pyramid
Right now, it's the PS3. It's better than the Wii and the Xbox 360, though most developers are too lazy to create games that fully utilize its potential (thus the many ports that are better on the 360). I like the sleek, black design. I've always loved dual shock controllers. I hate disc based media because it's always been so flimsy, but blu rays are built tough and remove the need for disc switching with all the memory space they have. Plus, the PS3 doesn't have a reputation for breaking down like 360s. I've had to send my 360 to Microsoft once. My PS3 has worked great since day one.
If we go further back, I'd say the SNES or the Genesis. The two that I have still work to this day, even though I can hear something rattling around inside the SNES from being dropped a few times and my Genesis occasionally resets itself if it gets moved around. They're still kicking though. Those cartridges were built to last too. I give some extra points to the Genesis for its hard, plastic game cases. The only thing I hate is the battery powered save system for those old games. I guess I could throw in some props for the Neo Geo too, though I never had one. Bottom line, cartridge based systems rock
I like Nintendo handhelds too. Built to last, and so are the cartridges.
Practically speaking, nothing beats the above systems and what's practical is really all I care about. Most of the other systems had flimsy, impractical CDs or DVDs (as opposed to the built to last blu rays and cartridges) and every Nintendo system after the SNES has shitty controllers. I loved the Dreamcast for its library of games, but its controllers were shit(absolutely nothing beats dual shocks, or 6-button Saturn pads) and, again, crappy non-blu ray optical media
