Heh, no worries. That thread was just in terms of looks, which some people are doing here, although your original question asked a bit more than that, I think.

There are so many good looking consoles. 6 switch wooden 2600, Odyssey 2, Vectrex, Famicom with the disk system, PC Engine with the CD ROM, PC Engine shuttle, Model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive (with or without Model 1 Sega CD), NTSC SNES, Amiga CD32, 3DO FZ-1, Jaguar+CD (As long as there is no cartridge), Apple Pippin,Dreamcast, PS1, Gamecube, The panasonic Gamecube, Xbox (I only wish the X on top of the console were green too, it would slook so cool then).

I'm ignoring things like build quality, how good the platform is for programming etc but if I have to factor in the controllers, then I'll say that number one spot goes to PS1 (both the original and the slim with the more white color scheme and controller) and 3DO FZ-1 and second place goes to Dreamcast (a bit awkward controller, lacks 2nd analogue stick and the controller wire is in the back rather than front like in all other consoles but the console+controller combo looks so futuristic and neat)

I like the European 7800 with the rainbow colors a lot more, it just feels more 80s and Atari. I kinda wish I hadn't imported mine from the USA, I could've bought a PAL 7800 for very cheap with two controllers only like 3 weeks after I bought mine from the US :?
Snowman Death Droid wrote: Somebody in the thread I made previously also mentioned that model of 3DO. I don't know much about the console, other than a lot of people disliking it. The controllers aren't much of a negative in comparison to the console itself for you? I've heard that they were pretty bad.

The controller was why I didn't put the Nintendo 64 as my number one. The console's still great, but the controller is a serious flaw.
It's a mix of SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis 3 button controller, it's very comfortable. Although I personally think that the Jaguar "pro" controller feels quite nice (many people hate the Jaguar controller) so I dont know if I'm in the minority with my opinnion here too.

I also would like to like N64 more than I do, but the controller (and game library to some extent) just make it seem very meh compared to Saturn, PS1 and Dreamcast.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I'm gonna answer both topics in one post:

Best looking system is the SG-1000.

That's the look of a console you just didn't usually see in the 80s. To be fair, the famicom is also a look most consoles didn't go for, but I find the famicom to look a bit more garish, while I really enjoy the color scheme of the SG-1000

As for overall hardware, I'd say the HD model 1 Genesis. Hook it up to a model 2 Sega CD and a 32x, and you're in business. I like the controllers, even if they are a wee on the wider side; They feel comfortable, and the d-pad is very responsive. (Although it does start to hurt my thumb after long bouts of particularly heated play.) I believe it was also one of the first consoles to have wireless controllers, which is a very nice option. Sound and graphical output on the HD model 1 is excellent, and the Sega CD and 32X do a lot more than people really give them credit for as 'tumors.'

Behind the Genesis would be the Dreamcast, which is my favorite console. The add-ons for the Dreamcast were pretty interesting: Karaoke machine, web-cam, maracas, fishing pole, microphone, midi cables, VMUs. There were even more in the works that were never released, but equally intriguing. It may not have had the vaunted technical capabilities of its rival hardware, but I prefer the crispness of its graphical output, and the strong audio output it produces. Not to mention opening up the internet and online gaming to a wider console audience. The thing was a modern marvel back before the turn of the century.

Just so I'm not posting a wall-of-Sega post, I also really like the design of the Colecovision. Aside from being able to provide home ports of arcade titles that fairly accurately represent the original cabinets, it could be tucked away into a shelf and look like a DVD player from some alternate universe's early 1980s. Look a little closer and it actually has some joystick/num-pad controllers. Admittedly i hate the controllers, but fortunately, they can be swapped out with Genesis controllers.

I would go with the CDX. I love how nice and compact it is. Awesome how they can a gen with cd unit into that package back in the mid 90s.

Alright, thanks. :)

So what's your favorite?
I'm not sure. They all have their flaws. Saturn, Dreamcast (although I like it's look less and less when I think of the ugly gray controller port), and 360 slim all have their strengths. PS2 slim and Genesis model 2 are up there as well. I think it'd be easier to point out the flaws in consoles. As far as the overall package, I think I'd have to go with the Sega CD model 2 setup. The two together might not look the absolute best, but to be able to play both CD and cartridge games is pretty awesome.

Which makes me wonder, is it possible for a Saturn game to be played through its cartridge slot?

It seems I've heard a lot about model 1 Genesises (Genesi?) on these forums. What makes the model 1 better than the model 2?

I've also been curious about the Sega CD, but I don't know what all it has to offer in terms of games, aside from Sonic CD and...um...more Sonic CD.

Better is relative I suppose. The main advantage it has is audio quality. A lot of the model 2 board revisions come with significantly inferior sound chips. If you're outputting through s-video or composite, the HD model 1 units also have an advantage in that as well. All of the model 1 and 2 genesis revisions can natively output RGB, so if you're going that route, it's really only the sound chip.

Oh, and for Sega CD games, a ton of them are imports, but Batman, NHL 94, Sol-feace, Lords of Thunder (although there's a better port on the PC engine) Robo Aleste, Popful Mail, Keio Flying Squadron, Bari-arm, Sylpheed, Shining Force CD, Lunar 1 and 2 and a ton of other things I'm forgetting.

It looks a bit small. Why are the symbols for start and select play, pause, and stop symbols, like you'd find on a VCR or DVD player?
