Thanks for the heads up on Fire Arrow, its awesome!
I love those Caravan shooters. I'd definitely post some scores if someone opened up a high score thread for any of the Caravan shooters.
What shmup are you playing now?

Did you check out that guy's other games?

Most of them are demos, but they're looking pretty cool at the minute.

I've been playing Otomedius. Not too bad, except for the horrible lagging at points; I mean holy hell this is a 360 game, why does it have so much slowdown?
I'm pissed as well. I got to the final boss, and apparently I bombed while it tried to do some large attack, and the game froze.
Other than that, pretty fun with lots of anime boobies.

Got a couple of TurboGrafx shmups.
Cyber-Core is an awesome vertical-scrolling bug-shooting game. You don't die/explode in one hit, you just loose your shield and power down, so the game has a nice smooth flow to it. I think I'll actually be able to finish this one with a little practice.
On the flip-side, I also picked up Deep Blue. Wow, it's bad. You play as a fish shooting jellyfish and mola molas and other fishies in the sea. You move slow as hell and are constantly bombarded by endless waves of enemies that move twice as fast as you. The weird thing about this game - you can take a shitload of damage before you die. Maybe each hit counts as a "life", I dunno, but I got hit about 20 times in level one before I saw Game Over.
Speaking of weak shmups, I also picked up D-Force, which is a SNES game released in 1991. The hit detection in this one is just awful. I guess you get to shoot dinosaurs later on, but I can't pass level one.

Bwahaha. It will beat you down again and again. The best way to check out the rest of the gameBoneSnapDeez wrote:I also picked up D-Force, which is a SNES game released in 1991. The hit detection in this one is just awful. I guess you get to shoot dinosaurs later on, but I can't pass level one.
- jack lives up to 9
- play in Shooting or Exploration mode, that way you get to play stages 1/3/5/7 or 2/4/6/8 respectively.
Tough, but still sorta enjoyable.

Played Cyber Core a while back; I thought I was going to get the 1cc first time I played it, the first 7 levels are ridiculously easy. Then I got my ass kicked on the final stage. Not exactly a well balanced game... Haven't gone back to it, though, I suppose I should give it one more run, just to finish it.
It's a common problem with PC Engine games. I was playing Blazing Lazers recently and thinking it was way too easy. I got killed after about 30 minutes and thought, 'Well, that must have been near the end', but I looked up a YouTube vid and it seems the play length is around 55-60 minutes! Imagine the fun of trying to 1cc a game where the first 25 minutes offer no challenge whatsoever...

Re: What shmup are you playing now?
Popped into the Namco Wonder Tower in Kyoto yesterday to check out what games they had. Most of the arcade games are on the 5th floor, which is dominated by fighting games, but there are some shmups too - I spotted Mushihime-sama, Mushihime-sama Futari, Strikers 1999, DDP, DDP DFK, Darius Burst Another Chronicle and...some others.
Only had time for one quick go on DDP DFK (only 50 yen a credit) - hadn't played it before but I assumed that the hypers worked like DDP DOJ. I didn't realise that button D activated the hypers...until right at the end of my credit. Still, I managed to make it to the level 3 boss on my first go and that was without doing any bullet-cancelling. Now that I know what the controls are, I reckon I should be able to do even better...

Re: What shmup are you playing now?
In preparation for the NES Shmup list, I just played Thunderbirds and Thundercade. Thunderbirds has some HORRENDOUS hit detection but the story is actually pretty good and all the vehicles from the series make appearances, if you're old enough to remember it. Thundercade is sadly a MICRONICS port, so it just sucks. Stick with the arcade version. (oh why oh why did they have to port EXEDEXES too?)
