Just got a 3do...

Post by AwesomeMonstar »

... and need to get anything for it. I have no clue what's good, where to get controllers etc. I know you can burn games on cds for it but i dont know if you do it in the same way you would a dreamcast game... I guess what I'm asking for is a beginners guide to it since i figure someone here knows the worth behind this thing and i trust my fellow racket boy members taste.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

I could tell you how to burn games, but I can't honestly tell you that any are worth the CDR...

Burning is the easy part, (burn image using whatever program will do) You don't need a mod chip or anything, It's the good games that are far and few between, remember these games are all early 90's so expect alot of grainy fmv and shoddy gameplay. But anyway here are some good ones.

killing time
super street fighter 2
samurai shodown
return fire
twisted
road rash (complete with awesome 90's grunge music)
blade force
captain quasar
need for speed
starblade
fifa soccer
gex
demolition man
out of this world (almost forgot that one)

o.k these are the ones that i thought were great, i've played them all and actually finished them, (except for blade force).

have fun dude.

Congratulations on getting a 3DO, although I'm not sure why you bought one if you don't know what games you want to own. :?

Anyways, I used to own a 3DO back in the SNES/Genesis days and it was pretty cool for its time, but it obviously hasn't aged well. That being said, there are still some great games worth owning.

My favorite games on the 3DO were:

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (perfect port of the arcade classic minus long loading times)
Gex (pretty good platform game with good graphics and music)
Twisted: The Game Show (hilarious game show game that's really fun to play by yourself or with friends)
Need for Speed (although very different from the newer NFS games, this one is still fun to play)
Total Eclipse (a cool 3D space shooter)
Shockwave (a great 3D shooter with nice cutscenes & story)
Off-World Interceptor (great action and funny cutscenes)
Wolfenstein 3D (great port of a classic game)

Other games that are supposed to be really good, but I've never played are:

Star Control 2
Return Fire
Alone in the Dark
Road Rash
Super Wing Commander

IMO, the best place to find games and accessories is Ebay, although you need to make sure to do your homework and research each seller before buying.

Finally, here's an older forum discussion on some of the best 3DO games.

Have fun! :D

The 3DO is really picky about what media you use--and I believe the Goldstar version doesn't play much in the way of burned games, anyway.

It's too bad the bum rap that the 3DO gets, but it really does cater to a certain aesthetic. I LOVE my 3DO, and I would even love it if it only had Star Control II. I say this a lot, but SCII is very definitely one of the finest games ever made.

Just a few months ago, my wife and I went down to 4jays in the middle of nowhere Antioch, and she noticed a 3DO and we got it as an impulse buy.

Since then, we've been playing the hell out of it.
If you are a fan of FMV, the 3DO version of some of the FMV games that are on multiple platforms always seems nicer.

Games that come up a lot in "best 3do" lists are:

Super Street Fighter 2
Return Fire
The Horde
Casper
Daedalus encounter
Demolition Man
Fifa
Road Rash
need for speed
Samurai Shodown
Total Eclipse
Wing Commander III
Star Control 2
Twisted
Captain Quasar
Lucienne's Quest
PO 'ed
Space hulk
alone in the dark
Gex

The games that my wife and I like the best...
She likes Twisted a lot, and wants to play Killing Time soon.
We both like all of the horror games on the console:
Alone in the Dark, D, Doctor Hauzer (there's sites that explain how to get past the Japanese), Escape from Monster Manor.

Right now we are playing Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller. It's an interactive movie, with a kinda point-n-click interface inbetween very long "cut-scenes" that are basically the game. It's a lot more fun to play with one of the Mac/PC strategy guides like this

as the strategy guide has a lot of information that makes the game make a bit more sense...

This link will give you a good list to start with
http://fz1-3do.blog.co.uk/2007/09/30/3d ... to~3065120

Also the 3DO has a decent import scene. It's not region-locked, so except for a few games that use kanji that the US 3DO's can't read, you can play any region.

Here is a link to some of the better import games
http://www.digitpress.com/archives/didyouknow_3do.htm

This link lists some of the import games based on how easy they are to play for non-english speakers:

http://cdinteractive.co.uk/3do/forum/vi ... 2f2328ac4c

Then there's all the "porn" on the system: I have a list if anyone cares, but its not comprehensive I know of about 24 of "adult" titles.... there are a lot of titles like "Coven" and "sex" and a bunch of Vivid stuff just that are just videos and not much else to attempts at making "real games" like Virtual Cameraman series to Issho! Janken Paradise, a Strip Paper, Scissors, stone game, and NeuroDancer.

We love the thing, but its not for everyone!

We've had good luck using Taiyo Tuden with Media ID : TYG02 burned at 16x.

Just got a 3do off of eBay and now I'm thinking that maybe I over-paid for it.
Let me run this by you guys and you can tell me more or less what you think the following which were in the item listing are worth:

3DO FZ-10 system. Boxed with all inserts, original operating manuals, av hook up, power cord, 4 controllers(1 controller is a Flight Stick Pro) all controllers in their original packages with their manuals.

33 games in mint condition, all in their original tall boxes and cd cases with instructions:
Shockwave
Shockwave 2 Beyond the Gate
The Daedalus Encounter(4 disc)
Corpsekiller
Hell
Quarantine
Creature Shock
3DO Buffet Sampler CD (Seven games to look at and limited play)
Bladeforce
Rise of the Robots
Burning Soldier
Syndicate
Wing Commander III Heart of the Tiger (4 disc)
Scramble Cobra
Sewer Shark
Panzer General
Space Pirates
Mad Dog McCree
Gunslinger Collection (3 disc)
Road & Track The Need for Speed
World Cup Golf Hyatt Dorado Beach
Waialai Country Club Golf
PGA Tour 96 EA Sports
FIFA International Soccer EA Sports
John Madden Football EA Sports
Foes of Ali EA Sports
Olympic Summer Games
Immercenary
Jammit Basketball
Dragon Lore
Carrier Fortress at Sea
Beach Volleyball with Karch Kiraly & Karolyn Kirby (Instructional)
GEX

So what do you guys think? Was $115(excluding shipping) too much to pay for this lot. It was more or less an impulse purchase and I'm thinking now that maybe I should have just let it go.

I probably would have just let that go. The 3DO is a novelty, really. I mean, I love the heck out of mine, but it's kind of an irrational love.

You got an excellent deal. Frankly, the system alone can sometimes run as high as $100. I can't say the 3DO is worth that much from a gamer standpoint, but it's the collectors that end up dictating how expensive games & systems are.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games
