do you guys perfer console or arcade versions of games

Post by mas »

First let me say rest in peace and thank you to breetai for all the help, knowledge, and advice for video games. You will be missed.
I want to ask everyone a question. What do you guys perfer the home console of a game or the actual arcade version of a game. For example do you actually would rather play street fighter 2 on the genesis or the snes the way we remembered as kids or just play the arcade version on an emulator or like psn or xbla?
For me I would rather play versions on a genesis or snes or nes. I did love going to arcades as a kid but the home consoles are how I remembered them. A few games are an exception robotron 2040 or smash tv or wwf arcade. Just curious what other people perfer.

Depends on how good the arcade game was. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtles in Time was a cheap and annoying arcade game with an absurdly high level of difficulty. The Super Nintendo version had a more manageable difficulty, better controls, and extra levels/bosses. For me, I'd take that version over the arcade one any day of the weak

When the arcade game is great though, a port just can't match the fun of playing the original unless it is arcade perfect , which many Saturn and Dreamcast ports were. I'd rather play the arcade version of Golden Axe than the Genesis one. However, I'll happily play some Capcom fighters on a Saturn or Dreamcast because they are perfect ports, and it's convenient to play them without the need of an emulator or actual arcade cabinet

And yes, we all will miss Breetai

Always arcade if possible! Also, never emulation. I have been fortunate to make many friends with arcade cabs of various sorts, and nothing beats the experience. Sitting next to another person and putting all the talk on the table at an arcade cabinet tops any gaming memory I have. I also believe that if you did not grow up around the arcade scene, it definitely does not have same impact.

I have told the Bay Area guys this before, but I would gladly trade off every single console item I have for my dream cab setups.

The best version, if the best version is the arcade i will prefer it if the console version is better i get that. For example i think the best version of final fight is on the sega cd since it has a great music and the screen has less enemies on it and is a bit more on the easy side (the arcade version WANTS your money and it's gonna get it).

The console version of Bionic Commando was better than its arcade counterpart.

I love the PC Engine version of Street Fighter II Champion Edition. I don't know what it is. I prefer it over the arcade version and over the Genesis version.

For the most part i prefer arcade because they are closes to being perfect port/version of the game. Though i tend to do horrible because i suck at using sticks.

PS:
Killer Instinct in the Arcade is amazing!
PSN- jacktsang05
WiiU- jacktsang05

Interesting question. For me personally it depends on the particular game. For instance, the example you used for SF2, I enjoy playing the closer more accurate versions that can be found via, CCC of SF Col. Vol 2, XBLA etc just as much as I sometimes love to play the 16 bit console versions that for whatever shorcomings they may have, are still damn impressive translations in their own right plus nostalgia may play a role in it too. My fav is playing the Genesis version alongside a Capcom Fighter Power Stick 8)

Now, for a game like 3rd Strike, I have (or have had) A LOT of complications on which port I perfer to play and enjoy. For the longest, the Dreamcast port was the only available version to play at home and it sufficed the community for better of worse. During the games early days, I would invest a lot of time in the arcade version on my campus Student Union on VS. play and further honed my skills at home via DC. As soon as the game hit the PS2 and Xbox platforms, the DC release was dropped in favour of the latter 2. It made sense really, considering the xbox version provided online multiplayer, but more significantly both releases provided gameplay closer to the arcade and CPS3 tracks over DC's revision rebalanced tweaks and arranged tracks. Even as the majority and myself included moved to playing the game on PS2, it still irked me to see how gosh dam awful the game looked on PS2 and XB, wether the game was played with or without soft filter enabled, the games visuals looked terrible compared to DC...

It would depend on the game/port in question. Usually, the better version.

I think for older games, that would tend to be the arcade version, but for newer games or ports, it'd probably be the console one. At some point, I think, it became less about trying to squeeze the arcade experience onto lesser hardware, and more about treating the arcade game as a starting point to add to.

For something like Killer Instinct, the arcade version, easily. Something like Blazblue, the home version for sure.

Depends on the game. Like for a platformer/adventure game I usually like the home console more. But if it's Ms Pac-Man or Millipede or arkanoid then I prefer arcade cabinet

I would almost always say arcade. Nothing beat the feel of standing up to a cabinet, popping in some quarters and going for a ride. I grew up in the glory days of Fighting Games in the arcades, where Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter dominated my time. I remember being a kid and having older teenagers come up and try to prove something to their friends, only to get demolished. Ahhhh those were the days.

Also, it really has to be an actual arcade and not emulation. Although it is convenient to relive and experience those games (and actually beat them) thanks to emulation, nothing compared to the environment and social aspects of the arcade. It is hard to find that social gaming experience anymore.
