An interesting read and they did in fact consult a few experts too. None of that sensationalistic stuff. However it is sad that CoD manages to outsell everything else by such a wide margin.. And it is a market after all, not an art exhibit. Violence is the easiest ticket to generate sales.

and, perhaps, the solid gameplay, sharp production values, and large online competitive community?
No. Casual xbox live gaming != competitive gaming. We've already discussed before (one of the reasons) why the gameplay isn't solid.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Except that plenty of people play the game on PC or PS3, not everyone who plays the game on any of those platforms simply plays casually or in random matchmaking games, and there is indeed a competitive online community around the games - much more than almost any other title, in fact.
Anyway, I don't mean to derail this thread with COD defending, but too many folks on here seem to dismiss the game (and most in the genre) for reasons rarely related to the actual experience of playing it.

How do you know this? I play many FPS games and have completed several CoD titles. I've even played them competitively at conventions. I find them to be terribly dull, and the military fetishism makes me queasy.
I can't comment on the article unfortunately, as it seems to be blocked at my workplace.
