I don't get the Elfen Lied reference... Does it have something to do with my propensity to enjoy terrible anime?

For the record, I do think FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Phantasy Star IV, Ys I&II, Secret of Evermore, and many other JRPGs of the era are better than SoM.

I do think Secret of Mana is the best Seiken Densetsu game - so those who dislike it might wanna steer clear of the series in general.

Maybe I should try SoE, I remember liking the way that game progressed.

For the record, I didn't go into the game nit-picking... but after a while how could I not question why I wasn't really enjoying the game? And then, when I asked that question, I thought, "Damn, what do I even LIKE about this game?"

Comparing SoM's atmosphere to Super Metroid, now THAT is mind blowing.

I think maybe I would have been happy with the game being a bit shorter? You guys are comparing it to Ys, Zelda, Metroid... but those games are less than 10 hours each, where SoM is what, 30 hours? The length of a typical SNES RPG. It also limits your attacking in a turn-based action style, so to me it should be compared to Terranigma, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, etc. Those games all have story, character development, a growing combat system... stuff that tends to keep me interested in a game for the over-10-hour mark.

Amusingly, I knew you'd pick this song without me having to even click the link. But I don't consider it grating like you do.

He mentioned Elfen Lied in the anime thread and people shat all over it.

Ah, well I like Elfen Lied as well - so Valkyrie and I have that in common.

I anticipate being snowed in tomorrow. I think I'll start Ys: The Vanished Omens (SMS) tonight and hopefully finish in a couple of marathon sessions.

SoM is 20 hours at most for sure. That seems to be my magic number for SNES JRPG's, and believe me I was always a completionist back then. But pretty much every single SNES JRPG I've played I've completed within 20-30 hours.

I think we can just sum it up and say SoM wasn't for you, because I'm not getting your argument about the combat vs others. In Terranigma, the magic was consumable and so it wasn't around much. You have a few more varied attacks, but one character and other than that, you're just... also running around hitting enemies over and over again. Same with Zelda, is there really that much more variety in defeating enemies in it vs SoM? Same with Super Metroid. Same with Super Mario Bros, all Mario does is jump and stomp. In SoM you've got three controllable characters, two with their own magic and elements, a dozen or so weapons, and everyone gets new attacks as they level up and new magic as you progress. I don't see how there's any kind of "repetitive" factor here that isn't also apparent in every other game you mentioned as well. This applies to Chrono Trigger and other turn based games as well... they are rather simple themselves and it's pretty easy to beat a lot of JRPG's without fully utilizing combo's/magic in a lot of them, Trigger and FFVI definitely being good examples. You practically end up breaking the game if you take the time to master everything in these.

That's not to argue SoM is better than any of these, but I just thought that argument didn't really go anywhere since it applies to everything.

I'd go into detail about how SD3 is 10x more complex and flexible but at this point it's probably the last game the few of you would check out. Evermore definitely had a better magic system and like I mentioned earlier, was more fluid. SD3 has unique characters, special attacks, magic, classes, and way more to it.

Sue me for thinking these games had one of the best ARPG combat systems out there. They went and did away with some of the RPG elements (Legend of Mana) and that one didn't sit well with me.

I do think Super Metroid is a lot more atmospheric than most 3D games in existence, but still. How this, this, this, this, this, THIS, THAT, THIS (are you deaf?), IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG cannot teleport someone to another world is beyond me.

I don't know anything about the anime, but did you know there's a homebrew DC game of Elfen Lied?

Did that Elfen Lied game ever get a physical release? I've only been able to find ISOs on the internet.

I'm playing Ys 1 (SMS). Damn, this requires a lot of grinding compared to the others versions. Just beat the first boss and now I'm in the second floor of the palace. Using the Power Base Converter on a Genesis because I was too lazy to dig out my Master System. The controls are alright.
