That's just it. It doesn't matter that it's an old engine. It's the resolution it's running in. It's completely pathetic. And to think people still believe these consoles are still relevant power wise.

New engines can't make old hardware seem better than they are. In fact, they tend to make it even more obvious that the hardware is old.
I discovered that first hand as the PS2 got older. I was mystified at first as to why SOCOM 3 looked somehow grainier and less smooth than SOCOM 2. It's natural that it's happening again over the last year or so, considering how long these consoles have been going now. Spec-wise, I believe the 360 is supposed to be about on par with a mid-range 2005 PC.

Me and sherlock searched the house for Christmas presents while my mom was at the store. He ran under the bed and found something. Sega Saturn. Fuck yea. I'll tell my mom some excuse and hopefully get it tonight.

I don't know how your mom is or anything, but if I were in your position, I'd just keep my mouth shut. Christmas is less than 2 weeks away, only. And she might decide that since you know and ruined the surprise, she'll get something else, or take it away as a punishment for snooping.

She also was probably pretty satisfied with herself on being that, well, cool. Not a whole lot of parents (unless they are gamers) are going to be savvy enough to get so old a console for someone without asking them all the details. This might have been a big deal for her.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I was already in the room when she left playing NES with Sherlock in my lap. Not gonna say I was snooping, duh.

You're missing the point but that's okay. Giving presents can be just as important as receiving them. If she's excited to give it to you on Christmas, you kill some of the joy for her if you scheme and scam your way into getting it ahead of time.

I've only ever gotten two retro things for Christmas. A Neo Geo Pocket Color when I was 11 (and they were being re-packaged in those clamshell things and sold at the Discovery store) and a Sega Saturn when I was 12 or 13.
Older. Not wiser.

I can only imagine the look on my father's face if I asked him for a retro console for XMas. Or any console for that matter.

The online game that makes me wish I had gaming-quality internet the most is the PC version of Battlefield 3. What I've seen of it on Youtube looks insanely awesome. Huge maps, tons of players, many ways to play. It looks so much better than COD's multiplayer.

Of course, the way things look in a video is often different than how they actually are in person.
