Official covers for the masses, downloadable covers for fans

Post by J T »

If you haven't heard, the Bioshock Infinite box art is really boring for a game that looks so wild and imaginative. A lot of fans have complained that the box art is just a typical grizzled man with a gun cliche and that this is not only lame, but misrepresentative. Ken Levine's take on it is interesting though, and I can agree with the rationale.

The definition of gamer according to this article:

-Doesn't read about games
-Doesn't recognize a popular franchise from the current generation
-Doesn't bother to even read the back of game boxes
-Maybe only buys 3 games a year

----

Maybe it is just me but I would not call this person a gamer. This is a person who sometimes plays video games with a friend or to pass time. Just like there are people who read magazines but they are not a "reader", or a bunch of other similar examples.

I think the box art looks pretty good. Not amazing, but not bad.

Whether or not you'd label them a gamer (or they'd identify themselves as one, for that matter) doesn't change that they represent a very large base of potential customers.

To me, it's a broad, generic term. Like reader, or viewer, or driver are as well. By pure definition, they simply indicate participation in the activity.

For the topic...it's nicely done for what it is, but does little to differentiate the title. What I'd rather see instead of printable covers, however, would be the inclusion of additional printed ones from the factory. In the long run, for the quality, it'd cost them less than it'd cost the consumer. We've seen some games with reversible covers, but they can tend to look odd if the case is not opaque.
Unless they just do it intentionally to get enthusiasts to buy the collector's editions. I know that was a large factor for me with Mass Effect 2 & 3

I thought "real gamers" read the excellent, professionally written, historically knowledgeable, and non-biased Game Informer. Seriously, IGN is pretty good compared to GI, especially their older content.

I feel sad for the type of gamer that box art is aimed at.

I also feel sad about how easily people sell out and ignore artistic integrity for money. Ken is part of the problem, rather than the solution.
