The "better" gift will depent of the taste of the person and his/her preferences, and for what mas said looks like the genesis suits his brothers tastes better.
No, he said the he used to play all those systems and go to arcades with him. He never said he preferred one over the other. He also mentioned the guy liking Adventure and Fighting games, which SNES excels in both.

But the Genesis is still a fantastic system. Just seems to me it's a lot easier and cheaper to get a Genesis at any time while a SNES is getting more pricey every day.
Either console he chooses as a gift for his brother he will be getting a fantastic console

Wait... We have been ignoring the obvious choice. A retro duo type system.

Bam, right here. Or actually, how about a Retron 3? Then he gets all 3 systems in 1!

Turbo Grafx-16. 8)

On the actual topic, I see two ways to go about this:

1. Get the Genesis - Like others have said, the Genesis would be a great fit for the arcade and sports games. By going with the Genesis you can get your brother a console and several games to go with it.

2. Get the SNES - The SNES has plenty of adventure and fighting games to play. You might not be able to get as many games, but you might be doing your brother a solid by getting him a console and a couple well-known titles. That way, he has a SNES console and some staples in the SNES library. He might buy a Genesis in the future since it's less money.

Clone systems vary wildly in quality. I have an NES clone that boots games rather efficiently (it's a top loader), but the sound quality is awful. I believe some SNES clones won't play games containing a Super FX chip.

You might want to consider spending the $75 on a softmodded wii loaded with emulators, considering that he has no access to retro games aside from ebay and doesnt sound like he has the finances to start a decent collection. Also there are tons of games both his wife and kids can enjoy. Search craigslist, now with the wii u out its easy to find people unloading wiis around $75, and the mod is super easy to do yourself.
