No, it is stupidity.

I always use this analogy: It's the same thing as if someone from Germany flew a Nazi flag stating "It's not hate, it's heritage".

That's assuming that Confederates were as bad as Nazis... which they certainly weren't. Also, the Civil War was over twice as long ago as WWII, so people's feelings on it ought to be less sensitive. It's not like there's any veterans around anymore.

Thank god that all the problems caused by slavery and secession are well in the past and that we have completely moved past any impact of that history. I can't imagine why the flag might be seen as offensive.

Not all Confederate soldiers supported the notion of slavery. Conversely, many union soldiers did. Thus, boring was attempting to distinguish between two things (Nazi-ism and The Confederacy) which is a logical thing imo.

I agree that the Nazi analogy was poor (and Luke knows that he sucks at analogies ), but I don't know that the passage of time should count as some kind of rationale for people to be "less sensitive" to a symbol that, at least in part, stands for a pretty horrible ideology that many still embrace. Of course not all people who fly the rebel flag are racist, but most "proud racists" love to fly the rebel flag...

Unfortunately, when most people think of the Confederate flag, they think of modern racist rednecks rather than the actual Confederacy (which was much more complicated than just a bunch of hillbillies starting a war so they could keep being racist).

It doesn't matter which group was more in the wrong, it is not a competition of which group was the bigger asshole. The entire "It's not hate" is bullshit. People who wear or fly the confederate flag are making a statement that slavery should still exist and that "niggers" are inferior, and I ain't just whistling dixie. It shows a support of racism and in no way is it used to show "heritage". "I'm proud my grandpappy was a racist" is exactly the message the rebel flag conveys and I find it disgusting that the cowards who support the rebel flag don't have the testicular fortitude to say "Yup, I'm a racist".

You could also argue that slave owners were as bad as Nazis. I'd take a bullet to the head over spending weeks on a slave ship, followed by being auctioned off, and then living the rest of my life in fear.

I don't want to open a can of worms here, simply stating people who sport the stars and bars are racists.


Oh! Reminds me of my friend Elliott, who may be the only African American to be named Elliott. We were on our way to a bar and a pick up truck flying the confederate flag passed us. Elliott, out of nowhere, shouted "I married a white woman!" (which is true). I found it hilarious for some reason.

I have lived in the South for two decades and I can say without any hesitation I have never met a single person who displays the confederate flag who isn't racist.

I've lived in Missouri (technically a Confederate state) all my life, and in my experience it's 50/50 racist/not racist. Usually the ones who aren't racist fly it out of agreement with the states rights argument.

These are the words of a man who's never been put in that situation before. You also assume that all slaves were treated horribly. Of course, it's wrong that the slaves were slaves, but American slaves on average were treated much better than other slaves throughout history around the world. American slavery doesn't compare to Nazi-ism.

It bugs me how certain things are taboo to debate. There's basically one view people in this country are allowed to have about the Civil War, and any other opinion is purely racist and evil.
