Saturn mod chip woes :(

Post by dlmvii »

I bought a saturn chip from racketboy earlier this week, and of course I can't get it to work :\
I tried using A-B method, and wedging the power wire in. I'm pretty sure lens cables are all fit tightly, and I'm hoping that I'm capable of bridging two points together with solder, and that that's not whats wrong.
The drive's laser won't look for a disc, and goes to "checking disc format".

Just curious, does anyone know if maybe it's an issue of the chip not getting power, or the bridge not being right (or maybe I have to do the pin 14 thing? I don't think I trust myself with that :\)

Any insight would be awesome!

make sure you connected the power wire right and try the 14th pin method. it's easier than it looks
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:

That sounds like exactly what happened to me, and my problem was that the drive cable was inserted incorrectly. Make sure the lable on the cable (on the actual drive) is facing to the RIGHT... or to where the chip is, depending on your orientation. And then with the chip, make sure the lable is UP, and you can see the wording on the cable. Remember... drive port, lable facing the chip. On the chip, facing up.

Well I just got mine from Racket and it installed beautifully. One of the main things that you must do is plug the chip all the way into the connector. Even if its a bit flimsy you need to push it right into the connector. Also, soldering is the best way. I got mine to work with tape and brute force but I'm sure one knock of the Saturn will mean it will all come loose. Also make sure your Saturn is a model 2, or else it is possible that it will not work... I think! Anyway now I must start burning the 100 CD-Rs that I just bought. Got a lot of Sega gaming to do!

Oh also, I've seen that the PCTrap version can cause issues. I've never successfully modded a PCTrap saturn.

hmm, maybe I screwed something up on the chip when I tried to solder it, I'll probably get another and just use tape :\

When the laser isn't moving it means there is a connection that isn't complete somewhere. The power lead is easy since you are just soldering it to a metal point that sticks out. For the signal wire, as long as you have a Model 2 Saturn (as I understand it jap and model 1 saturns require that signal wire to be soldered to the chip), just loop it right back around put the lead through the hole and add a drop of solder to hold it in place. The worst place for bad connection is when inserting the chip into the slot and inserting that delicate ribbon cable into the chip. You really have to brace the chip itself press straight down and use slight side to side motions, it will slide a fair distance until it is all the way in. Same with the ribbon cable, you really have to shimmy it to get it all the way in. Do yourself a favor and use solder for the wires they are easy and aren't the source usually for bad connections.

Am I right in thinking that the Power cable (red wire) HAS to be soldered in place? I can't just push it place just to test it?

I'm waiting on a soldering iron you see and as my Modchip turned up today I'm a little impatiencent, and I've already unscrewed the Saturn in readiness.

Also, have I got the power cable in the right place?

I doesn't have to be soldered technically -- it just helps keep it attached.
You should be able to just hold it there to test.

mmmmmmm....ok bud thanks for that.

You see I've held it in place, switched the Saturn on and and the cd drive mechanism doesn't spin. I've got the blue cable looped through the back of the chip. Any ideas?

I had to file the chip down a little for it slot in and I'm fairly sure it's all the way in.

Again, any ideas?

Thanks in advance
