My Computer Crashed

Post by BurningDoom »

Had the dang thing for less than a year. It was a Dell, bought it brand-new from Best Buy. And ironically enough, I didn't do any less-than-legal downloading on this computer, as I did on the computer before it that lasted years. I guess it was Karma coming to kick me in the butt this time. Some virus got through my virus protection and messed up my hard-drive. System restore was a no go.

The good news is that I got a new computer, which means I automatically upgraded my Windows to version 8, I used the RAM from my old PC and put into the new one giving the beast 10 GB of RAM, and I got a quad-core! Plus a huge TB hard-drive.

What OS were you running? I ended up having to reformat my laptop (XP) all the time, but my PC with Win7 has been going strong for years now, and all I've ever used is Microsoft Security Essentials. Sounds like Win8 is even safer perhaps.

I'm confused, you trashed your system drive on a new computer and got an even newer computer out of it? Please tell me it was a warranty situation and you didn't purchase a new computer, since you could get back on your feet much cheaper with a new drive.

No warranty. Didn't purchase the warranty. The cost to get a new hard drive & labor and a new copy of windows would have costed close enough, so I just got a new computer.

EDIT:
I purchased the 2-year warranty, this time though.

Labor? New copy of windows?

What?

Are you afraid of opening a computer or something?

Not that tech savvy. I don't trust myself to do something like that and not screw it up.

Frankly, I can't understand how you can screw up installing a hard drive. The connectors to it are distinctly shaped and it's pretty clear what plugs into what.

If you can hook up a game console, you can put together a computer.
