SyFy Channel's Collection Intervention

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

SyFy Channel's Collection Intervention

Post by Gunstar Green »

Has anybody else watched this yet? http://www.syfy.com/collectionintervention

It's an interesting show that as a collector kind of hits home in a few ways. It's easy to look at some of the people featured and write them off as insane hoarders however they're not. They take great pride and have deep emotional connections to the objects they collect.

The point of the show is basically an attempt to get them to make their overblown collections more manageable but watching them wrestle over parting with some if their pieces is really hard for me to watch since I look at my gaming collection and feel that I wouldn't be able to do the same very easily in their position either.

Also it's just kind of a cool show, some of the collections featured are really incredible. I don't think there's been one about a video game collector yet though.

Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else was watching and how they felt about it?

Yeah i been watching it to so far i have seen alot of amazing toys. the guy that had all the transformers was awesome. It is kinda hard to see some of these ppl struggle with parting with there stuff. I still have toys from when i was little that remind me of happy times i know i could never part with them.

I'd rather not watch a show like this.

I imagine it'd probably just piss me off.

i just find out about this show and started watching it a bit this weekend. i overall like it, some of the people had great displays. i do like that they are not trying to get people to give up their collections but get them under control while focusing on what they truely want to collect and setup displays. like how she got the one guy to trade his average comics for a rare comic.

Watched about one-third of one episode. From what I recall, there was a somewhat overbearing wife trying to force her husband to purge his collectibles - had to change the channel, as it hit a little too close to home.

And like AppleQueso said, the very premise of this type of show pisses me off. Unless a person 1) starts spending their food/childcare/survival money on collectibles or 2) crosses the line into hoarding, then there's absolutely nothing wrong or pathological with collecting things, whether it's a room full of video games or shelves full of Star Wars toys. The folks who complain about collecting are the ones with the problem, not the collectors. People need to get over it.

A few episodes actually touched on some folks border line hoarding and some that were keeping more for them selves instead of selling for their business. There are others that are just pushing the collector to actually catalog it all and clear out their boxes of unknown items in their storage spaces or move their collection to where it will be safe and appreciated. Not every episode ends with SELL EVERYTHING or wife wins, collector loses.

I enjoyed it because it made me want start selling my stuff and clearing my shelves of all the "extra" stuff I was planning on selling but never did.

It was upsetting me at first as well but then I sort of realized why, because some of it kind of hit home. It encouraged me to shelve my collection better and get rid of some of the things that were really just taking up space.

I just watched two episodes, and was honestly intrigued. The woman who they bring in to help the collectors is a self-claimed movie poster collector herself, and apparently a recognized auctioneer of some sort.

The show focuses on collectors who are being inconvenienced by their collections, whether it has literally taken over every room of the house, prevented them from living an emotionally healthy life, or put them in deep financial debt. Psychologists who specialize in collecting/hoarding, and prominent dealers are often brought in, and sometimes the show even heads out to local comic book/pop culture shops.

The intention of the show is to keep each persons' collections at a healthy level where they can be displayed and not have a negative impact on the owner's overall quality of life. The show seems more focused on preventing people from crossing the line to hoarding, than ridding the individual of their collections altogether. One wife was even taken aside for being overly upset with her husband's Catwoman collection.

It's compelling enough to see what certain people like to gather up in their homes, the added drama is just icing on the cake.

I watched a bit of an episode.

The thing that hit me is that the push is not something I would need. I have this huge problem with still owning anything I won't read/watch/play again. I have some games that I felt kinda bad about selling, but I knew I wouldn't ever play them again, so I was safe to give them up. I think that's what the show is trying to do, focus on keeping the collector's collecting what they will appreciate, not what will collect dust.
