How do you choose movies you want to watch?

English is not my first language so maybe Stale is not what I think it means, but the story was really stretched out over 3.30 hours , which made the whole thing very very slow for me.

I usually do not enjoy old movies lets say, 70's and earlier. The 70s is a bit mix for me as there are some really good movies like The Godfather but there is also those very slow ones that are more like in the 60's and 40's .

I am not sure if they make the story's events slow on purpose back then or not, as some older movies i enjoyed greatly like Ben Hur , Cleopatra , and Citizen Kane . But on the other hand there are very slow movies that were hard to watch like Seven Samurai and The French Connection.

I understand what you say about Wreck-It-Ralph and I have no problem with people who do that, but for me I am not here to analyze the movie for my Film Arts class. I watch it to have a good time, so I will not go deep into analyzing each frame . I am also not here to write an essay for my philosophy class to analyze the very sick movie Requiem for a Dream. I had to watch some youtube videos after that movie to get out of the very depressing mood....by the way I see the director of that movie as a successful one as he transfered the emotions he wanted over to me, I just choose not to see similar movies again.

I also use Rotten Tomatoes. I think a large enough sample of critics are generally right.

I generally avoid summer blockbusters, and anything that tries to sell me on T&A.

I understand, but that's just it. I'm not a film critic, or a film major. I just really like movies and all of the little bits and bobs that go into making a film. Watching stuff over and laughing at Dusty Bottoms kill the Invisible Swordsman in THREE AMIGOS for the 106th time, or finding that extra bit of flavor in the scene IS fun for me. You can apply your feelings on this matter to video games as well. How many times have I played Chrono Trigger? Definitely more than 12 times for all of the endings, but its such a great game, that the ride to the end is fun, and worth repeating. I beat Super Mario Bros on the NES when I was a kid hundreds of times. It was still fun. I've seen Star Wars a bajillion times, and I still love it. I'm also huge on movie/tv show quotes. In a way, quoting a scene/line from a movie/show is a way of rewatching it - in my mind!

I didn't like Requiem for a Dream either, and I actually really like Darren Aronofsky as a director. The film just didn't settle well with me. It didn't make me depressed, I just didn't enjoy it. Maybe upon subsequent viewings I might grow to like it, but who knows.

I just find it crazy that we're actually sitting here trying to explain to someone why a movie can be entertaining on more than just the first viewing, even if you don't 'study' film. I mean geez, watching a movie multiple times is obviously a pretty normal thing to do, otherwise there would be no need for a home video industry at all. I mean, why would people buy a movie when they could just rent it or see it once at a theater, right?

I'll just drop my .02 cents here.

When I pick movies, it comes down to just looking at the movie's basis and seeing if it is something I would like. I tend to avoid artistic movies, torture 'porn', love movies, etc. I stick to action, shoot 'em ups, westerns, etc. Stuff that interests me. I use my friends to keep tabs on things that would be good, seeing we have similar tastes. I also sometimes check internet reviews and such. When it comes to following directors, the only directors I follow are Tarrantino and Rodriguez. (On Rodriguez, I discount Spy Kids. They obviously don't count.) Other than that, I wing it and hope for the best.

On watching movies over, I can't see your point. I love to watch stuff over. I've seen Dusk till Dawn around 100 times, and still love every minute. Lots of movies are fun to watch and relive. I can't really see why you can't find one to rewatch...

As an aside - I will say I don't see how people will want to watch a movie more than once - in a row. My brother in law will do that. We'll watch a movie he's never seen at our place, and literally during the credits, he'll say "lets start it over." I don't see the fun in that. Maybe the next day, but not 2 minutes afterward.

There are only a handful of movies I can remember doing this for, and I've reserved them as special. Friday, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I Know Who Killed Me, and the full screen cut of De Palma's Scarface.

Not exactly a top 4, but for me it's more of a refusal to remove myself from the world set up by the films. Kinda like catching up on a really good tv serial, except there's only 1 long episode.

I wouldn't necessarily seek those out, but if TCM aired it I would watch it. Mind you, it I highly doubt TCM would ever air any of them, but if it did I'd sit through it, probably uncomfortably twitiching in my seat most of the time.

I couldn't stand Salo. I like my artsy-fartsy, and I like my exploitation - but a film like that is impossible for me to enjoy. Maybe I didn't get the message, I just don't care.

Same here, and I love Pasolini but Salo reeks of ass (Literally ). It's nothing but psychological, sexual and physical torture for 2 hours disguised as high-art, now that's the worst combination anyone could make (Unless we are talking about Martyrs).
