I'm talking about a series that started off average and continues to be after many sequels. Do you have one in mind that isn't so popular or AAA like, but you love it with passion?

Even though it is well received critically, I think the Ogre Battle series qualifies for me. It is a niche game/series and is much less known in the U.S. But this could be the case for most JRPGs not named Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Persona...
Another game for me would be Shadowrun on the Genesis. I have always had a soft spot for it.
I loved the PC strategy series Kohan. For its time, it was a unique and very fun RTS game.
Another long time favorite of mine is the Aerobiz series. I have found memories as a kid sinking hours and hours into that airline sim.

It may not count, but I'm a fan of the 3D Sonic series. Well, within reason. I understand some of the flack it gets, but at times, the negativity I've seen for it generally revolves around the fact they're not 16-bit Megadrive games.

Ogre Battle was one of the N64 games I had and enjoyed. Didn't like in the beginning because it wasn't like "Final Fantasy" or "Chrono Trigger," but then it grew on me mainly because the story was good.Jmustang1968 wrote:Even though it is well received critically, I think the Ogre Battle series qualifies for me. But ogre battle games are good, aren't they? By "starting off average" he probably means game series that aren't anything special (brings nothing new to the genre, not particularly good games by any means but still playable), but still have sequels. Like Gex and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger games, I guess?Jmustang1968 wrote:Even though it is well received critically, I think the Ogre Battle series qualifies for me. There are plenty of game series that aren't that popular but are still very influental, well made and widely respected by critics and "hardcore gamers".

The Cotton shoot em ups (hence my member name).
Just very pretty games that always make me smile, the design represents what I feel is Japan at its best, taking lots of cues from the Makai Mura franchise (Ghosts n' Goblins) and adding plenty of clever touches. The cut scenes are very funny. And the graphics on Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams for the Saturn just plain blow my mind.
Of course, Cotton 1 is a bread and butter shmup, nothing really special about it in terms of gameplay, although the format that sees levels scroll horizontally, vertically and even diagonally is pretty neat. And Cotton 2... well, a shmup where you have a huge hitbox with fighting game style commands, so essentially you're flying all around as you input say a hadouken, probably never got past being a mere novelty.
Lesser known, never above average, but still very fresh in terms of design... I think you can definitely see traces of the Cotton games today, in some of this generation's best Japanese arcade games: Rachel in BlazBlue was clearly inspired by Cotton 2, especially her tempest Dahlia attack, and of course Deathsmiles borrows a lot from both games in terms of design.

I guess the question is too specific and somewhat contradicting. I just went with the not popular but I love it part. I don't think I could be that passionate over an average gameMenegrothx wrote:But ogre battle games are good, aren't they? Fell in love with Omikron and subsequently the company Quantic Dream. Picked up Indigo Prophecy on PS2 on release, played a bit of Heavy Rain at a buddies house(no PS3 for me) and awaiting Beyond: Two Souls.
Mis-adventures of Flink had a sequel on PS1, but I do love the series, just the first game on Sega CD.
Love the Parodius series, but I think most folks accept that they are solid games.
Assault Suit series, starting with Target Earth, was also a fav for me. The 2d, platformers...not that turn-based strategic one.

I seem to be the only person who likes the Mega Man Battle Network sub-series. It's a simple and fun collection of action RPGs, and they're well suited to handhelds.
