Obama will attempt bolder (read: riskier to his approval ratings) things, but the Republicans in the House still control that branch and are going to continue to shut him down as much as they can. He's a lame-duck president in his second term, so expect disappointment. Even good presidents tend to disappoint in their second terms.

The power of optimism is not so strong in this one.

Boehner's conciliatory speech was well done. He's a good statesman, and his continued presence in the House reassures me. His point asking for President Obama to lead us as Americans is perhaps the best example of an opportunity to fix our immediate crisis.

I'm concerned about what I'm hearing from Harry Reid about changes to the filibuster rules. Reid is leaving the Senate soon and likely does not care about what may happen if the needed number of votes drops to a mere majority to end a filibuster. Problem is, it's a double-edged sword, and it reduces one of the few checks the minority party always has. Yes, Republicans have used it a considerable amount, but eventually the senate will swing back. And while we're at it, convincing only a handful of Republicans to vote to end a filibuster wouldn't be that hard if things were a bit less partisan overall.

Mexico is also examining changes in their narcotics laws due to legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington. That should be interesting. Holder used to threaten to enforce DEA statutes when California tried legalizing, but he is apparently on the way out...and I am happy to see him go.

Compromise is a wonderful word, but I think a lot of politicians have forgotten it's meaning. Perhaps we should send them a dictionary with the word bookmarked, circled and highlighted.

I was wondering about the states that legalized marijuana. How does that work with the federal laws that are in place? Is it just wording to get around it, or is it pretty much a null decision?
