I'm not really a fan of horror movies. Would I still like this show?
I've enjoyed Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, Sherlock. Deadwood was so-so.
I would say no. There's little appeal for anyone who is not a fan of horror, and I don't think it's the best show on TV, not even close. It's not nearly as good as Homeland, Last Resort, Nikita, Fringe (the current season has been amazing), and Once Upon a Time. Also, when Supernatural is firing on all cylinders it's a better show as well and draws on a lot more horror elements than Walking Dead does.
I think Homeland is a show that you might like. Walking Dead is fun, but it's really for fans of zombie movies or the comic. It's got little appeal in my opinion for anyone else and is easy to criticize due to how far removed from reality so many things on that show are, like how the hell zombies can constantly sneak up on people or how everyone on the show is a sharpshooter, even when firing a shotgun from a moving vehicle. It's not even in the same league as some of the shows you mentioned. Breaking Bad and The Wire are on a whole other level entirely than The Walking Dead.
I agree it's not in the same league bit I'm not really a big horror person and I love it. It feels more like a show about people in a postapocalyptic world that happens to contain zombies.

someone doesn't watch sons of anarchy.....
Walking Dead is better, and I say that with confidence. What I see on Walking Dead is movie quality. The characters feel real and are played well enough that you truly feel for these people. The special effects are absolutely stunning. And believe it or not, since it's a zombie show, it's quite emotional. And it's definetly well written with Kirkman behind the scenes.
It's hard for me to imagine why non zombie horror fans would like Walking Dead. That's mostly why I watch, because it's a TV show with zombies in it. That's a rare thing. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the human drama, but there are other shows that do that better. As for the post apocalyptic setting, Revolution does that better. In fact, right now I'd say even Fringe does it better given the current season's story arc.
I really like The Walking Dead, but take the zombies out and there's no reason I'd watch it at all. Everything else about the show is done better elsewhere. Dialog, acting, human relationship drama, special effects, cinematagraphy. I could rattle off a list of shows currently on air that beat The Walking Dead in ALL of those categories. Even as a Walking Dead fan I think it's a bit overrated, but that's me. Always objective, even towards the things I like. Game of Thrones kicks The Walking Dead's ass easily, so does Breaking Bad, Homeland, etc.

Personally I love The Walking Dead, thought Game of Thrones was sleep-inducing, and stopped watching Fringe shortly after Season 3's retarded finale...
So far The Walking Dead has not disappointed me...
It's a great show, but I agree at some times everything just comes to a halt. Not a halt to build tension, but simply phoning it in.
Best show on tv is tough to call. I love everything from The Daily Show to The Fashion Police (I almost typed Daily Police and Fashion Show) as long as I get what I expect. Hell, even SNL has been pretty great this season.

I would say pretty much all the same things stand for soa. Although soa doesn't really call for a lot of special fx, when they do need them they're done as well as anything else. I don't really know what you mean by movie quality though, I find I'm more attached to tv stories and characters more than 99% of movies I see.

gave up on that show, got kinda boring to me. liked the first episode, quit by the 3rd.
i'm liking season 2 of american horror story. nice start to dexter's season and with the walking dead so far. no more time for anything else. meant to start game of thrones but if it's all "sleep inducing" i'll pass although if it's like spartacus maybe i'll watch.
