Damn, 90% of my hate for him steems from Smash Bros. I played Marth and Rob and while Yoshi is by comparison terrible, it's rolling attack is pretty good against them and incredibly annoying, I eat everytime.
I would also hate Sonic for similar reasons but he's so awful I can't complain

It's a baddly cropped Taiko drum who wants to propagate the fun of Japanese festivals with the world, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU???

Both Marth and Rob have several move capable of stopping Yoshi's Egg Roll. Marths sword attacks can stop the egg without taking a hit himself, and his counter is like the perfect response.
As for ROB, any projectile or his spinning special move will stop Yoshi no problem. Yoshi is good in Brawl, but his Egg Roll isn't that fantastic.
On topic, I like Yoshi in Smash Bros (although he's far from my favourite in all 3) and several of the Mario spin-off games. In the main platformer series though, I'm not really fussed. I think riding yoshi tends to make mario feel cumbersome and less acrobatic, which is the fun part of Mario games to me. This is especially true in New Super Mario Bros.
For me a character in fighting game needs more than a few cheap/ chez ball moves to be challenging or fun for me to play or go up against, On smash bothers I always thought the reason the computer gets like five yoshis was because he so terrible to begin with. Oh well more dino but to kick I guess.
Personally, I thought he was counter-productive to what Super Mario Bros was about when he was put in SMB4. At that point, SMB4 just seemed to be about bells and whistles rather than enhancing the basic premise of SMB which is jumping from point A to B and what not. I also thought he made SMB4 too easy when ever you'd get him.
As for other games he usually doesn't do anything for me to have a real opinion on him. But for the most part I can say there isn't anything really appealing about him to me. I guess he sounds kind of cool.
I used to play him in Mario Kart 64 because he was a lightweight, that's about the extent of my like for Yoshi.

Yoshi was only good in the first Smash Bros. in my opinion. He went sharply downhill after that.
Seems like my favorites from the first game got the worst nerfing in later games. Yoshi and Ness have never really been the same.

Don't add to my problems by pretending my past views are still held in the present. I do not have any patience for that. Feel free to ask me what I think now.

I guess I have to disagree. Both of those characters are better than they've ever been in Brawl imo.
The only thing I don't like about him is his constipated grunting whenever he does his second jump in Super Smash Bros. Seriously, what's up with that?

He did that noise in Yoshi's Island in GBA too. I'm sure in other games as well.
