Harsh.

I think the movie would have benefited a lot from leaving out the cameos. Either that, or I think I would have been better off not knowing anything about video games. The movie was filled with gimmicks and characters that were just drive-by product placements, much like the brand-name foods that kept cropping up, and I found it distracting. It kept pulling me out of the story. If Disney had dreamt up their own arcade filled entirely with games of their own creation, I think the movie would have felt less disjointed to me and instead felt more purposeful, creative, and clever.

That said, I can't deny the movie had its moments. Some Sugar Rush segments were captivating, I thought (probably because at those moments the film was freed up to use its own imagination). Q*bert seriously pulled on my heartstrings, and I also enjoyed Felix as a character and concept. But Ralph and Vanellope I couldn't get attached to -- and not for want of trying.

And here's a serious question (spoiler alert):
If Sugar Rush will reset when Vanellope crosses the finish line, why aren't Ralph and company worried they'll be erased if they're present when she does it?

Short answer: you're thinking waaaay too hard about the physics of video game characters.

Long answer:
Because resets happen in games, so the characters are familiar with the effects they have. The reason you die for real if you're not in your own game is that the foreign game doesn't have code that says "if ralph dies, resurrect ralph" because Ralph doesn't exist in the game's code. But the reset doesn't do a wipe and recreate. Instead it seems to walk through every object in the game's code and reinitializes it. Since Ralph isn't in the game's code the game doesn't reinitialize him.

WIR definitely stacked the deck with why you should love Vanellope, I agree. And I am by far the biggest movie nit picker here but for me it worked, not wrecked. - That would actually be my pull quote. Strike that, that will be my pull quote.

I saw it on Friday and I enjoyed it overall. I liked seeing all the different character cameos and looking for all the different references/easter eggs in the film. The credits were awesome too with the classic footage. 8)

It just hit me that the guys filming Candyland have got to be extremely worried at this point.

Just watched it, really enjoyed it. Felt like one of the older Pixar films to me. The cameos made me grin and it was a cute, fuzzy story. I can't really think of anything bad to say about it. I had a lot of fun.

Ive seen it twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I went in to it expecting it to be crap, but have some good one liners or cameos, but came out the first time with a burning desire to see it again - which is very rare for me (this was the first film I saw in the theater since Indy 4). There were a couple things that irked me in the film, like how all the cabs were plugged into one surge protector. But the little gags and obvious inside jokes to retrogamers made me smile really big: Like when they go to Tappers, the graffiti "Sheng Long was here," or the killscreen at the end of the credits. I wish the flash version of Fixit Felix Jr was more like the one in the film - with two buttons and voice samples. I hope that after the flim gets released the fans make it. Id love to play it properly.

My first viewing was with a bunch of my family and friends from back home, and Ack - it was my Bachelor party. The group was full of both gamers and non gamers, and everyone enjoyed it. Even my oldest brother who hasnt really played a game other than Ski Free since the NES days, thought it was a really fun film and laughed almost the entire time. My second viewing was with my wife, who is a moderate gamer. She did not get half the jokes but was smiling the entire time and kept quoting it on the ride home. Then we got home and she wanted to play Asteroids and Donkey Kong.

The game did have some weak moments, but overall I enjoyed it alot and will be buying it when it comes out on Bluray. I should also mention that both of my viewings were 2d (since 3d makes me sick). So I cannot comment on the 3dness of it.

Saw it, loved it. Girlfriend loved it too, and she's not much of a gamer. We both enjoyed the creativity that went into this movie.
