The main issue will be how the Sugar Rush plot completely takes over the movie. That and the movie trailers and posters promise cameos that are there, but only for a few seconds. Sarah Silverman's character is only tolerable because the movie does everything possible for the audience to like her.
But whatever. I love it.
Just got back from this and I have to agree with your spoiler-hidden comments. But it was a great movie, and will definitely be purchased for being able to view/catch all of the cameos/references. I wonder if Nolan North voiced the Zombie.

I know I'm being a HUGE nerd here, but did anyone else notice the Ryu sprite in the end credits scene where Ryu, Ralph, Felix and Venelope are beating up the car? They used the SNES or Genesis sprite and not the arcade sprite.. I wonder why lol.

just watched " the watchers". yeah, ben stiller and vince vaughn played their usual roles and jonha hill had lines trying to make him funny but failed, and the plot was stupid, the movie still entertained me. it was a good stupid movie with some laughs. plus some good old school easy-e and nwa soundtracks.

The Super Cops
Image

TCM showed a bunch of re-runs for the last couple of months during its Underground timeslot. So I haven’t had as much to work with as of late. But the last couple of weeks have been different, as they’ve finally been bringing out some different material. I’m partial to the cheesy horror movies, myself, but I do enjoy it when they mix it up a little, something they did a couple of weeks ago when they aired 1974’s The Super Cops.

Before you get your hopes up, no, this is not a movie about two cape-crusading police officers. Let’s just get that out of the way now. The Super Cops is about officers, Dave Greenberg and Rob Hantz, two rookies straight out of the police academy in good old New York who want to make a difference.

Image
All the following screenshots were taken and edited from a video so that you all have some
pretty pictures to look at. You’re freaking welcome.

Eager to make it up the ranks quickly to detectives (and to rid themselves of the designation of “Traffic Cop”), the two of them start making arrests while they are still cadets. This doesn’t sit too well with their fellow officers or the higher-ups, many of whom are corrupt. This is early 70’s New York you see, and police corruption was a bit of a problem (Educate thineselves.)

Realizing that the two of them cannot be bought, after graduation the powers that be assign the two to a particularly dangerous precinct in Brooklyn. Sadly, they find that this precinct is just as corrupt as the last.

Image
Don't be sad. At least we can get Nathan's Hot Dogs for lunch now, right?

They manage to find one ally at the station, but aren’t given much encouragement. Undeterred, the two of them set their sights on the many drug dealers allowed to run rampant in the area. They make daring busts and stupidly courageous arrests, at one point jumping out of cardboard boxes and telling people to freeze. Despite their perceived best efforts, they are miraculously not shot by any startled druggies.

Image
Why would you want to shoot me? I was in Slaughterhouse Five. You can’t shoot me.

Despite their best efforts, they are still perceived as a threat by the other police and they eventually turn their attention from the drug dealers to solving the corruption within their own midst.

Image
We solemnly swear to bring all your corrupt asses in……to the best of our ability.

The Super Cops is based on a book by L.H. Whittemore, and tells the story of real-life New York City officers David Greenberg and Robert Hantz. Undoubtedly the movie whitewashed many of the men’s characteristics in favor of making a buddy cop movie, one of the earlier entries into the genre.

Image

To give you an idea of what the movie is like you first have to know that it was directed by Gordon Parks, a veteran of blaxploitation, and the man who directed Shaft. Couple that with some decent actions scenes of people jumping through windows and onto wreaking balls and the same irreverence to authority as seen in Beverly Hills Cop and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into.

While it may not be a regular laugh a minute, it’s wiseass humor is refreshing and is a good way to satirize the police corruption at the time without making the real events and issues of the time seem to heavy.

The two actors play pretty well off one another. Leibman’s Greenberg is very charismatic, funny-man and he has a most excellent wiseass sneer that complements the material nicely. Selby on the other hand plays the obligatory straight man, complementing the pair nicely.

Image
Aren’t they just adorable together?

The supporting cast is decent, but nothing to write home about. There are two exceptions. The first is Greenberg and Hantz Brooklyn captain, who’s so paranoid and yet so desperate to leave the precinct that he comically switches between stoically indifferent and get-me-the-hell-out-of-here mode at the drop of a hat. The other is Sara, the hooker/ex-stripper/informant, who’s weary and disenchanted performance was a nice contrast to the wacky antics of the two leads.

Image
And a bra-less screen-cap. Because I care.

While the story moves along at a good clip, it can feel a little episodic at times. First they’re here, and then they’re there. I felt it could have used some more and better connecting elements.

Nevertheless, it was an interesting buddy cop movie with a very definitive 70’s feel that understandably reminded me a lot of movies like Shaft. I enjoyed the antics of the two ambitious officers. It may not have been Beverly Hills Cop or even Police Academy, but it was still an enjoyable experience.

just watched wreck-it ralph, I would give it a 9/10, but in one scene ralph's tooth gap is on the right side of his mouth and not perfectly in the middle. ruined the whole movie for me.

This could be one of the most awesome things in existence. It's a Yoshihiro Nishimura film (Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl, The ABC's of Death "Z for Zetsumetsu" segment) so it's definetely gory and insane.

It's basically a zombie film on crack, PCP, LSD and cough syrup and there's no way to describe the plot without describing individual scenes. During a rain of zombies one gets impaled in the Eiffel Tower, there's a chainsaw katana, a zombie made of swords fighting a sword truck, the main actress from Audition kicking ass, nazis and non-stop gory battle scenes  .

Also... it's on Netflix. GO GO GO

Saw Wreck it Ralph last night.

I really love the first 2/3 of this movie. It establishes a really cool world right off the bat, and I instantly loved it. The original cast is for the most part very charming, although Vanellope is kind of borderline. Something that I was really glad to see is that this movie totally stands on its own merit, it didn't try to just carry itself on established video games.

Where I think this movie really shines is in the middle though, some of the dilemmas and choices that Ralph has to go through are genuinely heavy and poignant (which is not something that I expected this movie to pull off). The scenes where
Ralph destroys the cart and when he returns home with his medal are amazing. When Ralph destroys the cart you're sympathetic towards his actions because the only alternative that he's aware of is the game being destroyed, it seems all he can do is make the tough choice. The next scene is my favorite because in spite of Ralph accomplishing what he set out to do, his return and the air around his home are just agonizingly hollow. You feel such empathy for Ralph because he's so tragic. It's like no matter what he does, accomplishes, or contributes to he just can't find acceptance or affirmation anywhere. I was so attached to Ralph as a character because he's such a victim of his circumstances, in some ways he's almost like a Frankenstein's monster of sorts.
Having gushed over all of that (which again I found fantastic), There were some issues I had towards the end of this movie. I feel like as we reach the climax the story just starts getting cluttered, and we start to see some cheesiness creep in. One thing I really didn't like was
Turbo. This character just felt so unnecessary to me. He's given like 30 seconds of backstory and almost zero characterization, and then suddenly he's the antagonist at the end. I just feel like the movie had done such a better job establishing some of its other characters that they could have done better than this hamfisted twist at the end.
Another problem that I had was the cheesy vibe some of the last parts of the movie had (especially compared to how well executed the parts in the middle were). Things like
Pretty much everything that had to do with Vanellope. I really didn't mind her for most of the movie, but so much of her at the end just irked me. "Oh I'm just me, oh I'm still a glitch and everyone loves me regardless". She's just instantly accepted by her peers. I feel like a lot of these developments were just quickly glazed over, and once again this clashes so much with how well character development was handled earlier in the movie.
I feel like if this movie had just given itself 10 more minutes it would have really helped the pacing at the end.

Besides all of that, I agree with Luke about
The movie spending a lot of time in Sugar Rush. For a movie that sort of sold itself as paying tribute to the arcades of years gone by, a lot of that is only in the first 1/3 of the movie. I can't help but wish that all of the cameos were as well integrated as the villains meeting or especially Tapper.
Overall I still enjoyed this movie a lot. I still consider it flawed in some regards, but it has real merit and I would absolutely recommend it.

Ugh, why the bloody long running time! And Blake Lively's obnoxious monologue is about an inch deeper than sodden slippers. A waste of time.

I kind of liked it. It's a mess but at least it was entertaining.

And yeah, that narration was even more useless than the Blade Runner one.
