I love how it's missing sound effects that were in the Genesis version.
and how it actually has to load special moves mid-fight
Maybe it wasn't the Saturn version? Dammit, now I'm confused; now I gotta see if it sucks. I haven't played it in such a long time.
The only older MK's I sunk a lot of time into were 3,UMK3, and MK Trilogy.
Yes, MK II was a dissapointment on the Saturn. Lots of missing audio samples and dreaded loading that occurs during specials much like Apple has mentioned. UMK3 port looks good at first glance but its also a piece of shit port if you ask me. The stupid developers who handled the SAT conversion took the code for PSX port of MK3 and simply added to it (and they didn't even pull this off correctly as MK3 levels that aren't in UMK3 linger as well as a Noob Saibot that is still modeled by Kano as oppose to a proper ninja that you see in UMK3). The end result it a game that doesn't play like MK3 or its update. Balance is thrown out the window with glitches galore and combos that shouldn't even work like (infinite galore!). MKT on the saturn is decent though althoigh doesn't run as smooth as the PSX version.
I do agree though that MK II on the 32X was very well done. Improved audio over the GEN version and additional frames restored. It's perhaps my favorite 32X game next to chaotix and VF.
I don't really play fighters on a high enough level to take much notice of UMK3's balance issues and whatnot on Saturn. For casual play it's plenty fine I think, though the load times are pretty annoying and way too frequent. Why does it have to load fatalities? Why can't it load them at the beginning of the match along with everything else? Why does it have to load all over again when going into round 2?
The MK2 port on Saturn isn't even suitable for casual play, imo. Such a shame, considering the Saturn really shouldn't have any problem handling a near arcade-perfect version.
CD AGES, what's your take on the DC port of MVC2? I've been playing it pretty much all day, and starting to really love it. I've never been a big fan of MVC2, and have played the PS2 and PSN ports prior. But I've been having so much fun unlocking characters I've really started to get into this one.
I understand. But def something to keep in mind though. Its better off playing UMK3 on SNES, GEN, or PS2 via MKA limited Edition.

Agreed. Always wonder how the PSX port of MKII stacks up...

Still really need a DC fightpad haha.
Oh don't get me started! One word, Fantastic!!! There something special about MVC2 running on Dreamcast hardware at least to me... and not just because the game was destined for an arcade perfect translation on the platform due to its NAOMI heritage. Maybe because the original MVC1 is also available on the same console and was a good indicator of the systems capabilities in bringing the arcade experience home without compromises. Maybe because a nice chunk of the roster feels like they represent some good on the dreamcast as individuals (Jill in RE3, Jin in Tech Romancer, Hayato in Plasma Sword, the Darkstalkers cast in Vampire Chronicle, hell even Amingo feels like should be part of the Samba de Amigo cast LOL!)
Yup. It sucks ball-sack. I had all of the MK's for SNES originally; MK 1,2,3, & UMK 3. I had Trilogy on N64, which was actually a decent port. The only good fighting game for the console, IMO.
